WVU Opens Big 12 Play on ESPNU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team carries a four-match win streak into Big 12 Conference play, as the squad heads to Lubbock, Texas, for a nationally televised match at Texas Tech on Wednesday, Sept. 25.
First serve from United Supermarkets Arena is set for 7 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
"We're excited to kick off Big 12 play on national TV," fifth-year coach Reed Sunahara said. "It's good exposure for our program, and I think the girls are excited about it, too.
"Overall, I thought we had a good preseason, and I'm ready to see that momentum carry over into conference play. We just need to stay consistent and take care of our side of the floor."
The Mountaineers (8-4) and the Red Raiders (10-4) will meet for the 17th time overall and 15th time in league play since WVU joined the Big 12 in 2012. The all-time series is knotted at eight, with the two teams splitting the series in 2018. West Virginia won its most recent meeting, defeating Texas Tech in four sets on Oct. 24, 2018, in Morgantown. Of note, WVU is 3-4 against TTU in Lubbock.
In its last weekend of competition, West Virginia posted a 3-0 record to claim the 2019 Mountaineer Invitational tournament title. WVU picked up a 3-0 win over Duquesne in its opening match of the two-day tournament on Friday evening. West Virginia did not miss a beat on Saturday, closing out the Mountaineer Invitational with a 3-0 sweep over Eastern Kentucky, as well as a five-set victory over Navy.
Sophomore setter Lacey Zerwas was named the tournament's MVP, assisting on 119 of the team's 150 kills to average 10.82 assists per set. She also notched 24 digs in three matches to average 2.18 per set and posted a trio of service aces.
Additionally, Zerwas was named the WVU Student-Athlete of the Week on Monday. The Phoenix, Arizona, native quarterbacked the Mountaineer offense to a 3-2 victory over Navy on Saturday evening, dishing out 55 assists to match her career high previously set at San Diego State on Sept. 6. She also registered 11 digs in the win to notch her third double-double of the season. In addition, Zerwas had 30 assists, eight digs and two service aces in the team's 3-0 win over Duquesne, followed by 34 assists and five digs in a three-set win against Eastern Kentucky.
Junior defensive specialist Alexa Hasting averaged 4.09 digs per set, totaling 45 digs in a trio of matches, as she joined Zerwas on the all-tournament team. Hasting also served up four aces and dished out 12 assists on the weekend.
Through 12 matches, sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Kristina Jordan leads the Mountaineers with 3.22 kills per set, and Zerwas leads in assists with 10.07 per set. Hasting leads the floor defense with 4.35 digs per set, and redshirt junior middle blocker Audrey Adams leads the team's blocking efforts with 0.98 per set.
As a team, West Virginia is hitting .217 and holding its opponents to a .188 clip, while out blocking its opponents, 95.5-87.5.
Following a 4-0 week at home, Texas Tech rides into Big 12 Conference play on a six-match winning streak. TTU posted a 3-0 record at the Red Raider Classic last weekend, defeating Houston, Incarnate Word and UTEP at United Supermarkets Arena.
Katy Northcut and Emerson Solano were honored on the Red Raider Classic All-Tournament Team, while Emily Hill was named the Red Raider Classic MVP. Hill continues to rank among the nation's top players, as she sits second among all Division I student-athletes with 257 kills and 287.0 points. Additionally, Hill stands 12th overall with 4.85 kills per set and 5.42 points per set. As a team, the Red Raiders rank fourth in the nation with 733 kills, averaging 13.57 kills per set.
After the trip to Lubbock, Texas, the Mountaineers return home to the WVU Coliseum on Saturday, Sept. 28, as West Virginia plays host to Oklahoma in a 1 p.m. ET tilt. A t-shirt giveaway is scheduled for Saturday's match. Additionally, the Mountaineer Maniac students will receive free food and a giveaway item. Mountaineer Kids Club members also can pick up their t-shirts during the afternoon matchup.
