
Mountaineers Drop Three Set Contest to UCF

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (15–11, 3–11 Big 12) was swept by UCF (16–10, 7–8 Big 12) in straight sets Friday evening inside Hope Coliseum. The match concluded with set scores of 18–25, 22–25, and 20–25.
The Mountaineers struggled to establish offensive consistency throughout the contest. In the opening frame, WVU managed seven kills on 32 attempts and finished with a .000 hitting percentage, putting the team in an early deficit. The second set showed modest improvement as the squad produced eight kills on 26 swings for a .154 clip, though the offense was unable to sustain momentum. The third frame marked the team's most active effort, tallying nine kills on 49 attempts, but despite the late push, the Mountaineers were unable to extend the match.
West Virginia closed the contest with 24 kills on 107 total attempts, finishing with a .065 hitting percentage. The Mountaineers registered 22 assists and added seven service aces to their offensive output. Defensively, WVU collected 46 digs and tallied seven total blocks, highlighted by four solo blocks and six block assists.
Junior outside hitter Nina Horning paced the Mountaineers' attack with nine kills on 42 attempts while adding two service aces and six digs for a team-high 11 points. Junior middle blocker Maddy McGath was efficient at the net, recording six kills on 14 swings (.357) and contributing two total blocks to finish with 8.5 points.
Sophomore outside hitter Maggie Elliott chipped in four kills on 20 attempts and three digs, while senior middle blocker Laila Ibrahim added two kills and two total blocks. Redshirt junior opposite hitter Trinity Sheridan tallied two kills, three digs, and a block assist, while redshirt junior setter Alexis Finnvold directed the offense with 18 assists, four service aces, and eight digs.
Senior libero LonDynn Betts anchored the backcourt with a match-high 21 digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Eily Painter added a dig, and freshman setter Sarah Pfiffner contributed three assists and a dig. Senior middle blocker Chalina Lederer and senior right side Lauren Bodily each registered two total blocks apiece, rounding out WVU's defensive effort at the net.
West Virginia continues its three-match homestand with No. 22 Colorado coming to town on Wednesday, Nov. 19. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside Hope Coliseum in Morgantown, W.Va.
