
West Virginia Concludes 2025 Campaign with Four Set Loss at No. 9 Arizona State

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University volleyball team (15–15, 3–15 Big 12) closed its 2025 campaign with a four-set defeat to No. 9 Arizona State (26–3, 17–1 Big 12) on Saturday afternoon in Tempe, Arizona. The match concluded with set scores of 15–25, 15–25, 25–18, and 16–25.
The Mountaineers opened with nine kills on 30 attempts in Set 1, but a .033 hitting efficiency allowed the Sun Devils to establish early control. WVU responded with 10 kills on 28 attacks, yet the squad again struggled to convert rallies into points. Momentum shifted in Set 3 as the Mountaineers delivered their strongest performance of the evening. Behind 12 kills on 28 attempts and a match-best .321 efficiency, WVU extended the contest. The fourth proved decisive, however, as WVU's offense dipped to seven kills on 37 swings with a -.081 efficiency.
West Virginia closed the contest with 38 kills on 123 total attempts, posting a .065 hitting percentage. The Mountaineers added 33 assists and four service aces to their offensive totals, while contributing 31 digs and 11 total blocks, including two solo and 18 block assists.
Redshirt junior opposite hitter Trinity Sheridan paced the attack with 13 kills on 30 attempts, hitting .267 while adding four total blocks and five digs to finish with a team-high 15.0 points. Junior middle blocker Maddy McGath followed with eight kills on 17 swings and four total blocks to total 10.5 points. In the process, McGath reached a career milestone, recording her 250th total block.
Junior outside hitter Nina Horning chipped in seven kills on 31 attempts, while also serving up two aces, three digs and adding two total blocks to reach 10.0 points.
Redshirt senior outside hitter Cassidy Tanton added five kills, a dig and a block,finishing with 5.5 points. Senior middle blocker Laila Ibrahim was efficient in the middle, recording four kills on seven attempts for a .429 hitting percentage and leading the team with seven total blocks to post 8.0 points.
Redshirt junior setter Alexis Finnvold directed the offense with a match-high 27 assists, while also contributing one service ace, nine digs, and two total blocks for 3.0 points.
Sophomore defensive specialist Eily Painter added five digs and a service ace, while senior libero LonDynn Betts anchored the backcourt with five digs and three assists.
Sophomore defensive specialist Tally Grissom chipped in an assist and a dig.
