
West Virginia Falls to No. 23 Baylor in Straight Sets

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (14–9, 2–9 Big 12) was defeated by No. 23 Baylor (13–8, 8–5 Big 12) in straight sets on Friday evening inside the Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas. The match concluded with set scores of 23–25, 16–25, and 19–25.
In the opening set, the Mountaineers came out strong with 15 kills on 37 attempts, hitting .351. The offense was fueled by 14 assists and a service ace, while the defense added 16 digs and one block. The second set proved more challenging, as the squad managed nine kills on 34 swings. The team contributed eight assists and a defensive effort of 13 digs and three total blocks. In the third set, West Virginia recorded 10 kills on 37 attempts, supported by nine assists, two aces, and 12 digs. The defense chipped in with three total blocks.
Overall, the Mountaineers finished with 34 kills on 108 attempts, hitting .176. The offense was paced by 31 assists and two service aces, while the defense anchored the effort with 41 digs and seven total blocks.
Redshirt junior right side hitter Trinity Sheridan paced the Mountaineers with a team-high 14 kills on 31 attempts, hitting .355 and finishing with 17.5 points. She also added six digs and three total blocks. Junior middle blocker Maddy McGath followed with an efficient performance, tallying seven kills on 13 swings for a .538 hitting percentage, while contributing one total block for 7.5 points.
Senior middle blocker Laila Ibrahim added five kills on 15 attempts and led the team in total blocks with four to finish with 7 points. Junior outside hitter Nina Horning chipped in five kills and three digs, while also recording a block for 5.5 points.
Additional contributions came from sophomore outside hitter Maggie Elliott, who posted one kill, three digs, and two total blocks, and junior middle blocker Lauren Bodily, who added a block. Freshman setter Sarah Pfiffner provided two assists.
Redshirt junior setter Alexis Finnvold directed the offense with a team-high 24 assists, while also adding two kills, one service ace, and eight digs. Senior libero LonDynn Betts anchored the back row with a game-high 19 digs and five assists. Sophomore defensive specialist Eily Painter contributed two digs.
West Virginia will have a quick turnaround as the team travels to Fort Worth, Texas, to face No. 16 TCU on Sunday, November 9. First serve is set for 3 p.m. ET inside Schollmaier Arena.
