
Mountaineers Outlast Texas Tech in Five-Set Thriller

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (15–10, 3–10 Big 12) earned a hard-fought five-set victory over Texas Tech (10–15, 2–11 Big 12) on Wednesday evening inside United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, Texas. The Mountaineers secured the match with set scores of 29–27, 21–25, 25–15, 15–25, and 15–0.
West Virginia opened strong in the first frame, recording 16 kills on 48 attempts with 15 assists and a service ace. The Mountaineers added 21 digs and four total blocks to claim the set. Texas Tech responded in the second, as WVU managed 15 kills on 33 swings but fell short despite 15 assists and 11 digs.
The Mountaineers regained momentum in the third, delivering their most efficient offensive performance of the night. WVU tallied 17 kills on just 24 attempts for a .583 hitting percentage, supported by 17 assists and eight digs, to take a 2–1 lead. The Red Raiders answered in the fourth, limiting West Virginia to eight kills on 32 swings, forcing a decisive fifth set.
In the final frame, WVU closed emphatically with eight kills on 19 attempts, eight assists, 11 digs, and two total blocks. The Mountaineers sealed the match with a 7–0 scoring run to secure the 3–2 victory.
Overall, West Virginia totaled 64 kills on 156 swings for a .244 hitting percentage, with 61 assists fueling the attack. The service line contributed five aces, while the defense anchored the effort with 62 digs and 10 total blocks.
Junior outside hitter Nina Horning paced the Mountaineer offense with a career-high 25 kills on 54 attempts, adding 11 digs and one block for her fifth career double-double. Redshirt junior right side hitter Trinity Sheridan followed with a season-best 23 kills on 45 swings, hitting .356, while tying her career high with seven blocks. Sheridan finished with a match-high 26.5 points.
Senior middle blocker Laila Ibrahim contributed four kills on 10 attempts and six total blocks. Junior middle blocker Maddy McGath added two kills, one block, and two digs. Sophomore outside hitter Maggie Elliott chipped in six kills and four digs, while freshman setter Sarah Pfiffner provided seven assists and two digs.
Redshirt junior setter Alexis Finnvold directed the offense with a team-high 43 assists, while also adding four service aces, 13 digs, and one block. The performance marked her ninth career double-double and fifth of the season. Senior libero LonDynn Betts anchored the back row with a team-best 15 digs and seven assists, while sophomore defensive specialist Eily Painter added a career high of 11 digs.
West Virginia returns to Morgantown to face UCF on Friday, Nov. 14 at 6 p.m. ET inside Hope Coliseum.
