LUBBOCK, Texas – Despite 20 kills from sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Kristina Jordan, the West Virginia University volleyball team suffered a 3-1 loss to Texas Tech in its Big 12 Conference opener on Wednesday evening, at United Supermarkets Arena, in Lubbock, Texas. The Red Raiders (11-4, 1-0) took the match from the Mountaineers (8-5, 0-1) in set scores of 25-23, 25-20, 23-25 and 25-19.
Jordan had a team-best 20 kills for WVU, while senior outside hitter Katelyn Evans notched a season-high 14 kills in the match.
Sophomore setter Lacey Zerwas collected her fourth double-double of the season, recording 40 assists and a career-high 19 digs on the evening. Junior defensive specialist Alexa Hasting dug 14 balls, while sophomore outside hitter Kristin Lux and freshman defensive specialist Natalie Winter had 10 digs apiece.
Redshirt junior middle blocker Audrey Adams and junior middle blocker Briana Lynch each had four block assists on the evening, followed by Jordan with a trio of block assists and one solo stop.
WVU finished the match hitting .163 with 52 kills and nine team blocks.
Despite Evans hitting a perfect 1.000 in the first set, the Mountaineers fell to the Red Raiders, 25-23. West Virginia called its first timeout of the frame, down 20-17. However, it was Evans who came off the bench with the hot hands out, finding the floor twice to bring the Mountaineers within one at 20-19. TTU put down a kill, as the Red Raiders later capitalized on a WVU attacking error to push its lead back to three at 22-19. The Mountaineers hung around though, notching back-to-back kills to cut their deficit to one once again. Evans came up with her fourth kill of the frame, but a bad set from WVU helped TTU reach set point at 24-22. Zerwas tipped one over the net on the next serve, but a Red Raider kill ended the set in their favor at 25-23.
Both teams traded points to start the second before Texas Tech tallied five in a row for the 21-17 lead. West Virginia took a timeout to regroup, as Jordan put down back-to-back kills out of the break to come within three at 22-19. However, TTU eventually reached set point on a pair of WVU attacking errors. Another kill from Jordan extended the set at 24-20, but it wasn't enough, as the Red Raiders answered with a kill of their own for the 25-20 second-set win and the 2-0 match lead.
The Mountaineers got into a rhythm early in the third, using a service ace from Adams to jump out to an 18-12 lead over the Red Raiders. However, Texas Tech went on a 4-0 scoring run to come within two, as West Virginia called a timeout. Holding an 18-16 advantage, WVU capitalized on a pair of TTU service errors down the stretch, as well as a kill from Evans, to push its lead back to three at 21-18. The Red Raiders continued to put up a fight, scoring three in a row to tie the set at 21-all. West Virginia did not back down though, using a trio of attacking errors to reach set point at 24-21. Texas Tech extended the set with back-to-back points, but Jordan found the gap for the 25-23 win, forcing a fourth set in Lubbock.
With WVU holding a 10-9 lead in the fourth set, TTU used a series of runs to take a 21-16 advantage late in the frame. Evans and Jordan each put down a kill, but the Red Raiders scored a kill of their own for the 25-19 win and 3-1 match victory.
The Mountaineers return home to the WVU Coliseum on Saturday, Sept. 28, as West Virginia plays host to Oklahoma in a 1 p.m. ET tilt. A t-shirt giveaway is scheduled for Saturday's match. Additionally, the Mountaineer Maniac students will receive free food and a giveaway item. Mountaineer Kids Club members also can pick up their t-shirts during the afternoon matchup.
