MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team dropped a four-set match to Oklahoma on Saturday afternoon at the WVU Coliseum. The Mountaineers (8-6, 0-2) fell to the Sooners (10-3, 0-2) in set scores of 25-8, 25-23, 29-31 and 25-21.
"I thought we were better than what we showed," fifth-year coach Reed Sunahara said. "It was disappointing that we came out like that. I thought our crowd was great and the energy was good, but we didn't bring the energy within ourselves. Oklahoma took it to us."
Senior outside hitter Katelyn Evans led the way with 12 kills, followed by sophomore outside hitter Kristin Lux with 10. Sophomore setter Lacey Zerwas assisted on 38 of the Mountaineers' 44 kills, with WVU hitting .121 in the match.
Defensively, junior defensive specialist Alexa Hasting led the way with a season-high 24 digs. Classmate Lindsay Proctor also dug a season-high 11 balls on the day. Junior middle blocker Briana Lynch led the team's blocking efforts with six block assists to match her career high previously set on Nov. 11, 2017. Redshirt junior Audrey Adams followed suit with four block assists in the match.
Of note, the Mountaineers posted 62 digs and 10 team blocks in the loss.
The Sooners rolled to a 14-2 lead to start the first set and never looked back. The Mountaineers took a timeout to regroup, scoring two of the next three to cut their deficit to 11 at 15-4. West Virginia later put down back-to-back kills to come within 11 once again, down 17-6, but Oklahoma used another 5-0 scoring run to increase its lead at 22-6. WVU capitalized on an OU service error, followed by a kill from Evans, but the Sooners claimed the 25-8 win off a Mountaineer miscue for the 1-0 match lead.
Tied at 18-all in the second set, WVU used a trio of kills for the 21-18 advantage late in the frame. Both teams exchanged kills down the stretch, but OU went on a 4-0 scoring run to take the lead at 23-22. West Virginia called a timeout, as Oklahoma put down a kill out of the stoppage to reach set point. Lynch came up with a swing to keep the Mountaineers hopes alive, but the Sooners put down a kill of their own for the 25-23 victory and 2-0 match lead.
In an extended third set, West Virginia recorded 17 kills and 26 digs to capture the 31-29 victory over Oklahoma. Trailing 22-19 late in the stanza, WVU used a 5-0 scoring run to reclaim the lead, as sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Kristina Jordan served up an ace to reach set point at 24-22. However, OU posted a trio of kills to extend the frame, serving set point for the first time at 26-25. West Virginia would serve set point two more times before winning the stanza, 31-29, on an OU attacking error.
Despite winning the third set, the Mountaineers could not put forth any momentum in the fourth, falling 25-21, as the Sooners claimed the 3-1 match victory.
Looking ahead, West Virginia will take on Iowa State on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 11 a.m., at the WVU Coliseum. During the match, Mountaineer fans will receive an opportunity to win a pair of tickets to the West Virginia vs. Texas football game set for 3:30 p.m. The match is free to the public and will feature a 'Beat Texas' t-shirt to the first 500 fans. Saturday's match also is a part of WVU volleyball's alumni weekend.
