AMES, Iowa – The West Virginia University volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to Big 12 foe Iowa State on Wednesday evening, at the Hilton Coliseum, in Ames, Iowa. The Cyclones (15-8, 6-5) took the match from the Mountaineers (11-13, 2-9) in set scores of 25-22, 25-23 and 25-15.
"I thought we did some nice things out there, but we weren't consistent enough down the stretch," fifth year-coach Reed Sunahara said. "Iowa State played well enough to win, and we need to learn to stay aggressive."
Sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Kristina Jordan had a team-best eight kills for WVU, followed by senior outside hitter Katelyn Evans with seven. Additionally, sophomore setter Lacey Zerwas dished out 22 of the Mountaineers' 25 assists.
Defensively, sophomore defensive specialist Keatan Broughton had a team-high eight digs, and Zerwas dug six balls on the evening. Senior right-side hitter Erin Slinde and redshirt junior Audrey Adams each registered a trio of block assists in the loss.
WVU finished the match hitting .140 with 27 kills and four team blocks.
The Mountaineers couldn't find their offense in set one, as the Cyclones rattled off five in a row for the 23-18 lead. WVU capitalized on an ISU service error on the next play, but an Eleanor Holthaus kill helped the Cyclones reach set point at 24-19. Junior middle blocker Briana Lynch kept the Mountaineers' hopes alive with a swing of her own, as back-to-back miscues from Iowa State brought West Virginia within two at 24-22. WVU couldn't put forth the first-set comeback though, as another kill ended the set in ISU's favor at 25-22.
The two squads exchanged points to start the second, but a 4-1 scoring run from ISU allowed the Cyclones to pull away at 15-11. The Mountaineers burned a timeout, as Zerwas dumped one over the net to cut their deficit to three out of the stoppage. However, another 3-0 scoring surge increased Iowa State's lead to five at 20-15. WVU did not back down though, capitalizing on a pair of ISU miscues to remain within three at 20-17. The Mountaineers continued to chip away at the Cyclones' lead, using back-to-back kills to trail by two at 24-22. Another ISU attacking error brought WVU within one, but the Mountaineers eventually dropped the set, 25-23, to fall into a 2-0 hole in the match.
West Virginia couldn't put forth any momentum in set three, as Iowa State went on an 8-1 run for the 20-10 lead and never looked back. Consecutive kills from Evans trimmed the Mountaineers' deficit to eight, but the Cyclones collected three of the last four points for the 25-15 third-set victory and 3-0 triumph in the match.
Looking ahead, West Virginia welcomes TCU to the WVU Coliseum on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 6 p.m. ET. It's Luau Night, and Mountaineer fans are encouraged to wear Hawaiian-themed gear. The first 250 fans in attendance will receive a free lei. It also is the second and final Dollar Night promotion planned for the year. Additionally, Mountaineer Maniac students in attendance will receive free food and a giveaway item.
