MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team dropped a four-set match to Big 12 foe TCU on Wednesday evening, at the WVU Coliseum, in Morgantown. The Mountaineers (11-14, 2-10) fell to the Horned Frogs (9-13, 4-8) in set scores of 25-21, 20-25, 25-18 and 25-21.
"First of all, it's disappointing," fifth-year coach Reed Sunahara said. "TCU played well, and we didn't take advantage of the opportunities that we had. I thought we had some opportunities to score, and we didn't do that. We shot ourselves in the foot. It's tough, but we have to get back at it."
Senior outside hitter Katelyn Evans paved the way for WVU with 17 kills, followed by sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Kristina Jordan with 13. Junior middle blocker Briana Lynch rounded out the Mountaineers in double-digits, registering 10 swings on the evening.
Sophomore setter Lacey Zerwas dished out 43 of WVU's 48 assists, as the Mountaineers hit .150 in the match. She also added 11 digs to record her eighth double-double of the season.
Additionally, junior defensive specialist Alexa Hasting had a team-best 17 digs and dished out five assists. Lynch also posted six block assists and one solo stop for a match high. Evans added four block assists, while senior right-side hitter Erin Slinde followed suit with three.
Of note, the Mountaineers posted 57 digs and had 10 team blocks in the loss.
After falling into a 1-0 match hole, West Virginia bounced back with a win in set No. 2. Tied at 15-all, WVU used a 4-0 scoring surge for the 19-15 advantage and never looked back. Jordan later put down a pair of kills to increase the Mountaineers' lead to five at 23-18, but the Horned Frogs answered with back-to-back points of their own to sneak within three late in the frame. Following a West Virginia timeout, Jordan came up with a huge swing to put the Mountaineers at set point, before winning the stanza, 25-20, on a TCU attacking error.
With the overall match score tied at one set apiece entering set No. 3, TCU scored seven of the first nine points for the 7-2 lead. WVU climbed its way back into the frame though, as a kill from Evans jump started a 6-2 run to bring the Mountaineers within one at 9-8. However, the Horned Frogs capitalized on a pair of 3-0 scoring surges for the 19-14 advantage down the stretch. West Virginia called a timeout to regroup, with Evans and Lynch finding the floor to cut the Mountaineers deficit to four at 21-17. Although, three straight attacking errors from WVU handed TCU the 25-18 win and 2-1 lead in the match.
TCU rattled off six in a row for the 19-15 lead late in the fourth. A pair of TCU service errors brought WVU within two, down 21-19, but the Horned Frogs did not back down, closing out the contest with four kills for the 25-21 win and 3-1 triumph in the match.
