November 05, 2019 02:35 PM | Volleyball
AMES, Iowa – The West Virginia University volleyball team travels to Ames, Iowa, for a rematch with Big 12 foe Iowa State on Wednesday, Nov. 6. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at the Hilton Coliseum.
Wednesday's contest against the Cyclones will be broadcasted live on CyclonesTV, with live video and stats links available on WVUsports.com.
"When we are locked in and compete, we are a pretty good team," fifth-year coach Reed Sunahara said. "We can do some good things. Right now, we are a little bit inconsistent, and when you play good opponents, that inconsistency makes it hard to climb back. Iowa State is tough. They are good. Historically, they have been to the NCAA Tournament every year, and we are looking forward to going there and competing hard on Wednesday."
WVU (11-12, 2-8) and ISU (14-8, 5-5) will meet for the 19th time overall on Wednesday and the 16th time in league play since WVU joined the Big 12 Conference in 2012. Iowa State owns a 17-1 all-time series advantage, as the Cyclones picked up a 3-0 win over the Mountaineers in their most recent meeting on Oct. 5, at the WVU Coliseum, in Morgantown.
In its last match, West Virginia suffered a 3-0 loss to No. 1 Texas on Nov. 3, inside Gregory Gymnasium, in Austin, Texas. The Mountaineers fell to the Longhorns in set scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25-16.
Senior outside hitter Katelyn Evans registered double-digit kills for the 11th match in a row, posting a team-high 10 kills in the loss at Texas. Junior middle blocker Briana Lynch was three kills shy of double-figures, recording seven kills on 16 attacks for a team-best .375 hitting percentage. The Mountaineers finished the contest with 33 kills, hitting .146 in the loss.
Of note, Evans is on pace to record her 1,000th career kill in her final season as a Mountaineer. The Palmdale, California, native boasts 928 kills thus far and is 72 swings short of the career milestone.
Through 23 matches, WVU is hitting .205 and averaging 12.68 kills per set. Sophomore setter Lacey Zerwas paces the Mountaineers offense with 10.12 assists per set. Evans leads the squad with 3.27 kills per set, while Lynch owns a team-high hitting percentage of .315. Additionally, junior defensive specialist Alexa Hasting anchors WVU's floor defense, averaging 4.17 digs per set to rank second in the conference.
Iowa State has won three of its last five Big 12 matches, but most recently suffered a 3-0 setback at No. 3 Baylor on Nov. 3, at the Ferrell Center, in Waco, Texas.
As a team, Iowa State is hitting .247 to rank third in the league. The Cyclones attack is led by sophomore right-side hitter Eleanor Holthaus. Holthaus, a Preseason All-Big 12 selection, is in her first season as a six-rotation player. She leads ISU with 3.16 kills per set and has contributed 2.31 digs per set, which includes three double-doubles. She also is third on the team in blocking, averaging 0.83 blocks per set.
Looking ahead, West Virginia welcomes TCU to the WVU Coliseum on Wednesday, Nov. 13, at 6 p.m. ET. It's Luau Night, and Mountaineer fans are encouraged to wear Hawaiian-themed gear. The first 250 fans in attendance will receive a free lei. It also is the second and final Dollar Night promotion planned for the year. Additionally, Mountaineer Maniac students in attendance will receive free food and a giveaway item.
