Saturday marks the first match of the season between the two teams, as the Mountaineers (8-7, 1-2) and the Longhorns (7-3, 2-0) first met in August of 2012. Texas currently holds a 12-0 all-time advantage in the series. However, WVU took then-No. 6 Texas to five sets for the first time since 2014 on Sept. 23, 2017, at the WVU Coliseum.
West Virginia is coming off its first Big 12 win of the season following a sweep of Kansas State on Wednesday evening. Four Mountaineers hit above .330, as junior right side hitter Natania Levak paved the way with a match-high hitting percentage of .647, recording 11 kills on 17 total attempts and no errors. West Virginia ended the night hitting .290, the fifth time this season the squad has hit .225 or better. The Mountaineers registered 40 kills on 93 total attempts with 11.0 team blocks and 37 digs.
Texas opened its Big 12 Conference season with a five-set win at Kansas State on Sept. 19, followed by a sweep of No. 21 Baylor at home, on Sept. 26.
Sophomore middle blocker Katie DeMeo has developed into one of the league's premier blockers. She currently leads the Big 12 in blocks per set, with 1.58, totaling 76 on the season. The Troy, Ohio, native also ranks fifth among all NCAA Division I players in blocks per set. DeMeo is on pace to etch her name in the WVU single-season record book. Her average of 1.58 blocks per set would rank No. 1 all-time by a Mountaineer sophomore and second overall in a single season in program history. Additionally, she boasts 76 total blocks on the year, 33 shy of moving into the top-five all-time by a sophomore.
Additionally, the Mountaineers rank third in the Big 12 and No. 25 in the nation, averaging 2.67 blocks per set. WVU is outblocking its opponents, 147.0-105.5.
Junior outside hitter Katelyn Evans has played in all but one set for the Mountaineers this season. She leads the team with 166 kills, averaging 3.07 per set to rank ninth in the Big 12 Conference. The Palmdale, California, native has recorded double-digit kills in 10 matches, including her last six. She posted a season-high 21 kills on 49 total attempts, hitting .265, in the 3-1 loss at Texas Tech last Saturday.
The Longhorns lead the league and rank No. 6 nationally in hitting percentage, with .298. Freshman middle blocker Brionne Butler ranks second in the Big 12 with a hitting percentage of .387. She also ranks 36th among all NCAA Division I players. Additionally, junior outside hitter Micaya White leads the team with 3.55 kills per set. Defensively, Texas ranks fourth in the Big 12 in blocks per set, as senior middle blocker Morgan Johnson and Butler each led the way with 1.24 blocks per set to rank seventh among all league players.
Of note, the Mountaineers are four wins away from collecting their 700th win in program history. West Virginia currently holds a 696-730 all-time record since its inaugural season in 1974.
Looking ahead, West Virginia hits the road for a match against Kansas on Wednesday, Oct. 3. First serve is set for 7:30 p.m. ET, inside the Horejsi Family Athletics Center, in Lawrence, Kansas. The Jayhawks hold a 13-1 lead in the all-time series. However, West Virginia upset No. 14 Kansas in its regular-season finale last season for its first-ever win over a top-25 team. The Mountaineers took the match from the Jayhawks in set scores of 20-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-22 and 15-12.
