WVU Meets Iowa State on the Road
November 09, 2018 05:15 PM | Volleyball
AMES, Iowa – The West Virginia University volleyball team travels to Ames, Iowa, for a rematch with Big 12 foe Iowa State on Saturday, Nov. 10. First serve is set for 9 p.m. ET at the Hilton Coliseum.
Saturday's contest vs. the Cyclones will broadcasted live on CyclonesTV, with live video and stat links available on WVUsports.com.
"When we are locked in and compete, we are a pretty good team," fourth-year coach Reed Sunahara said. "We can do some good things. Right now, we are a little bit inconsistent, and when you play good opponents, that inconsistency makes it hard to climb back. Iowa State is tough. They are good. Historically, they have been to the NCAA Tournament every year, and we are looking forward to going there and competing hard on Saturday."
West Virginia (11-14, 2-9) and Iowa State (12-13, 5-7) will meet for the 17th time overall on Saturday and the 14th time in league play since WVU joined the Big 12 in 2012. ISU owns a 15-1 all-time series advantage, as the Cyclones picked up a 3-1 win over the Mountaineers in their most recent meeting on Sept. 19, 2018, at the WVU Coliseum, in Morgantown.
Of note, WVU has not won a match on the road in Big 12 play this year, holding a 2-6 overall record in away matches thus far. West Virginia enters Saturday's match winless in the state of Iowa, going 0-6 inside the Hilton Coliseum since joining the Big 12 in 2012.
Most recently, West Virginia capped its nonconference season with a 3-1 win over in-state rival Marshall on Wednesday, at the WVU Coliseum, in Morgantown. The Mountaineers, who took the match in set scores of 18-25, 25-18, 25-23 and 25-17, claimed the Golden Ball Trophy three times in the last four years.
Sophomore middle blocker Katie DeMeo currently ranks third in the Big 12 Conference in blocks per set, totaling 108 blocks on the season to average 1.38 per set. The Troy, Ohio, native also ranks 20th among all NCAA Division I players in blocks per set.
DeMeo is on pace to etch her name in the WVU single-season record book. Her average of 1.38 blocks per set would rank No. 3 all-time by a Mountaineer sophomore and eighth overall in a single season in program history. Additionally, she boasts 108 total blocks on the year, one shy of moving into the top-five all-time by a sophomore.
Junior outside hitter Katelyn Evans has played in all but one set for the Mountaineers this season. She leads the team with 301 kills, averaging 3.24 per set to rank eighth in the Big 12. The Palmdale, California, native has recorded double-digit kills in 17 matches, including 13 of the last 16.
Iowa State enters the match on a two-match losing skid in Big 12 play, falling in four sets at TCU on Nov. 3 and at Baylor on Nov. 7.
Jess Schaben, who is a two-time American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Honorable Mention All-American, AVCA Midwest All-Region and All-Big 12 First Team honoree, leads the Cyclones with 3.76 kills per set to rank fifth in the league. Hali Hillegas, the 2017 Big 12 Libero of the Year, leads the team defensively, averaging 4.48 digs per set to rank second in the conference.
Of note, the Mountaineers are one win away from collecting their 700th win in program history. West Virginia currently holds a 699-737 all-time record since its inaugural season in 1974.
Looking ahead, WVU will close its regular-season home slate with a pair of Big 12 matches against TCU and Oklahoma. Nov. 14 against TCU (6 p.m.) will be Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night. All WVU faculty and staff will receive free admission with a WVU ID. West Virginia will then square off against Oklahoma on Saturday, Nov. 17, at 1 p.m. It's Mountaineer Kids Club Day, and fans will have an opportunity to receive the Mountaineers' autographs one last time following the match.
