MANHATTAN, Kan. – The West Virginia University volleyball team treks to Manhattan, Kansas, on Saturday, for an 8 p.m. ET league tilt with Kansas State at Ahearn Field House.
Live stats will be available for the match through Statbroadcast. The match also will be broadcasted live on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app.
"Kansas State is playing well right now," fourth-year coach Reed Sunahara said. "It's a tough place to play, so we have to be ready to go."
West Virginia (10-13, 2-8) and Kansas State (12-9, 2-8) first met in 2012, when the Mountaineers joined the Big 12. K-State owns an 8-5 lead in all-time series, though, the Mountaineers have topped the Wildcats in their last three meetings. WVU swept K-State in its most recent meeting, winning in set scores of 25-21, 25-15 and 25-17, on Sept. 26, 2018, at the WVU Coliseum, in Morgantown.
WVU has not won a match on the road in Big 12 play this year. The Mountaineers are currently 2-5 on the road this season. West Virginia currently holds a 3-13 record in the state of Kansas, with its first match coming against Kansas in 2000.
West Virginia most recently suffered a 3-1 loss to Big 12 foe Kansas on Wednesday, at the WVU Coliseum, in Morgantown. The Jayhawks took the match from the Mountaineers in set scores of 25-22, 21-25, 30-28 and 25-13. Junior outside hitter Katelyn Evans, junior right side hitter Natania Levak and sophomore middle blocker Katie DeMeo each tallied 12 kills in the match, as DeMeo hit a team-high .423 on the evening. Junior defensive specialist Gabrielle Cuckovich had a team-high 14 digs, matching her career high set as a freshman. The Mountaineers finished the match hitting .220 with 54 kills and 50 digs.
DeMeo has developed into one of the league's premier blockers. She currently ranks second in the Big 12 Conference in blocks per set, totaling 105 blocks on the season to average 1.40 per set. The Troy, Ohio, native also ranks 18th among all NCAA Division I players in blocks per set.
The Mountaineers rank fourth in the Big 12, averaging 2.43 blocks per set. WVU is outblocking its opponents, 211.5-176.5.
Evans has played in all but one set for the Mountaineers this season. She leads the team with 273 kills, averaging 3.17 per set to rank 10th in the Big 12. The Palmdale, California, native has recorded double-digit kills in 15 matches, including 11 of the last 14.
Following a week off from competition, Kansas State seeks to snap its two-match losing skid, as it dropped a home match vs. Oklahoma and a road tilt at Iowa State last week. However, the Wildcats picked up a pair of wins over ranked teams a week prior, defeating No. 22 Kansas at home and No. 24 Baylor on the road.
Redshirt senior Kylee Zumach leads the team offensively with 3.52 kills per set, totaling 10 or more kills in 14 matches. Of note, the Wildcats are 10-4 when she reaches double figures. Defensively, senior middle blocker Macy Flowers averages 1.40 blocks per set, ranking third in the Big 12 Conference. As a team, K-State averages 13.6 kills per set and 2.2 blocks per set.
Of note, the Mountaineers are two wins away from collecting their 700th win in program history. West Virginia currently holds a 698-736 all-time record since its inaugural season in 1974.
Looking ahead, the Mountaineers will return home to cap their nonconference slate with a match against in-state rival Marshall on Wednesday, Nov. 7. First serve is set 6 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum, in Morgantown.
Wednesday's match will be a Gold Rush, where all fans are encourage to wear gold. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a foam finger, courtesy of WVU Medicine. It also is the Mountaineers last Dollar Day of the season, with tickets and select concessions available for $1 each.
