WVU Welcomes KU on Halloween Night

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team plays host to Big 12 foe Kansas on Wednesday, Oct. 31, with first serve set for 6 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum.
"Hopefully we can carry our momentum from Texas Tech into our second match of the second half of the Big 12 season on Wednesday," fourth-year coach Reed Sunahara said. "Anytime you win, you figure out what you did right. We are looking forward to this match and tomorrow night. We are looking forward to having all the fans coming out, supporting us and celebrating Halloween."
Fans can don their Halloween costumes for free admission. Attendees also are invited to enter into a costume contest. In addition, the Mountaineer faithful will receive an opportunity to win a WVU prize pack, including four tickets to WVU's football game vs. TCU on Nov. 10.
Fans can purchase tickets by visiting WVUGAME.com, calling 1-800-WVUGAME or at the Mountaineer Ticket Office, located at the Gold Gate of the WVU Coliseum. All tickets are general admission.
When purchasing online, tickets are $5 each and $3 for groups of 10 or more. At the WVU Coliseum ticket window, tickets will be $7 for adults, $5 for youth and seniors and $3 for groups. The discounted online pricing will be available until first serve on game day. Fans are encouraged to order tickets in advance online at WVUGAME.com to avoid lines at the gate.
Tickets for WVU students are free with a valid student I.D.
The Mountaineers (10-12, 2-7) and the Jayhawks (13-7, 6-3) meet for the 16th time overall on Wednesday and the 14th time in league play since WVU joined the Big 12 in 2012. KU holds a 14-1 advantage in the all-time series, though West Virginia has taken Kansas to five sets in three of the last four meetings. West Virginia dropped a five-set match to Kansas in its most recent meeting on Oct. 3, at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center, in Lawrence, Kansas.
"We watched what we did against them last time, and I thought we played well for two and a half sets," Sunahara said. "Kansas is good. They are historically good, so hopefully, we can do our best and make it a battle on Wednesday."
WVU upset then-No. 14 Kansas in its regular-season finale last season for its first-ever win over a top-25 team. The Mountaineers took the match from the Jayhawks in set scores of 20-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-22 and 15-12.
West Virginia snapped a three-match losing streak on Oct. 24, claiming a 3-1 triumph over Texas Tech, at the WVU Coliseum, in Morgantown. The Mountaineers had 55 kills and just 26 errors on 158 total swings, with 11 team blocks, in the win.
The Mountaineers are currently 7-4 at the WVU Coliseum this season and is 316-233 at home all-time. West Virginia's four home losses came against Wright State (Aug. 25), Iowa State (Sept. 19), No. 4 Texas (Sept. 29) and No. 24 Baylor (Oct. 13).
Sophomore middle blocker Katie DeMeo has developed into one of the league's premier blockers. She currently sits atop the Big 12 Conference in blocks per set, totaling 104 blocks on the season to average 1.46 per set. The Troy, Ohio, native also ranks 10th among all NCAA Division I players in blocks per set.
DeMeo also is on pace to etch her name in the WVU single-season record book. Her average of 1.46 blocks per set would rank No. 2 all-time by a Mountaineer sophomore and tie for fourth overall in a single season in program history. Additionally, she boasts 104 total blocks on the year, five shy of moving into the top-five all-time by a sophomore.
The Mountaineers rank fourth in the Big 12, averaging 2.52 blocks per set, and are 38th in the nation. WVU is outblocking its opponents, 209.5-164.5.
Junior outside hitter Katelyn Evans has played in all but one set for the Mountaineers this season. She leads the team with 261 kills, averaging 3.18 per set to rank 10th in the Big 12. The Palmdale, California, native has recorded double-digit kills in 14 matches, including 10 of the last 13.
Freshman setter Lacey Zerwas leads the team with 602 assists, averaging 8.99 per set to rank eighth in the Big 12. Her average of 8.99 would rank No. 4 all-time by a Mountaineer freshman. She also has 602 assists on the year, 81 shy of moving into the top-five all-time by a freshman.
Kansas is currently on a three-match losing streak, most recently falling to Baylor in three sets on Oct. 27, at the Ferrell Center, in Waco, Texas.
The Jayhawks feature one of the best defenses in the conference, leading the Big 12 in blocks per set (2.93) and opponent hitting percentage (.175). Rachel Langs leads KU's presence at the net with 1.45 blocks per set, which ranks second in the Big 12. Zoe Hill also checks-in to the top five in blocks per set, averaging 1.29 to sit in fourth. Offensively, Jada Burse averages 3.34 kills per set and has reached double-figure kills in 9 of the last 11 matches.
Of note, the Mountaineers are two wins away from collecting their 700th win in program history. West Virginia currently holds a 698-735 all-time record since its inaugural season in 1974.
Looking ahead, The Mountaineers will trek to Manhattan, Kansas, to square off with Kansas State (12-9, 2-8) on Saturday, Nov. 3. First serve is set for 8 p.m. ET inside Ahearn Field House. WVU swept K-State in its most recent meeting on Sept. 26, at the WVU Coliseum, in Morgantown.
