MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Looking to get back on track in the second half of Big 12 Conference play, the West Virginia University volleyball team welcomes Big 12 foe Texas Tech to the WVU Coliseum on Wednesday, Oct. 24.
"We are familiar with all the teams now, but they are familiar with us as well," fourth-year coach Reed Sunahara said. "We just have to keep plugging away one day at a time and one match at a time. We have Tech coming up, and we have them at home, so we get to play in front of our wonderful fans."
First serve is set for 6 p.m., and there will be a t-shirt giveaway to the first 500 fans.
Fans can purchase tickets by visiting WVUGAME.com, calling 1-800-WVUGAME or at the Mountaineer Ticket Office, located at the Gold Gate of the WVU Coliseum. All tickets are general admission.
When purchasing online, tickets are $5 each and $3 for groups of 10 or more. At the WVU Coliseum ticket window, tickets will be $7 for adults, $5 for youth and seniors and $3 for groups. The discounted online pricing will be available until first serve on game day. Fans are encouraged to order tickets in advance online at WVUGAME.com to avoid lines at the gate.
Tickets for WVU students are free with a valid student I.D.
The Mountaineers (9-12, 1-7) and the Red Raiders (15-7, 4-4) meet for the 16th time overall on Wednesday and the 14th time in league play since WVU joined the Big 12 in 2012. TTU took the lead in the all-time series earlier this season, defeating WVU in Lubbock, Texas, on Sept. 22, 2018. However, West Virginia took Texas Tech to five sets at home last season, claiming the 3-2 victory inside the WVU Coliseum on Nov. 11, 2017.
"We played well in spurts throughout all the Big 12 matches this season," Sunahara said. "We just have to put it together to where we are consistent and applying what we are learning in practice in the games. We also have to finish matches when it comes close."
West Virginia dropped a pair of Big 12 matches on the road last week, suffering a 3-2 loss at TCU on Thursday and falling to Oklahoma in three sets on Saturday. WVU finished the week hitting .119 with 89 kills and 21.5 total blocks.
Sophomore middle blocker Katie DeMeo currently sits atop the Big 12 Conference in blocks per set, totaling 100 blocks on the season to average 1.49 per set. The Troy, Ohio, native also ranks 12th among all NCAA Division I players in blocks per set.
The Mountaineers rank fourth in the Big 12, averaging 2.51 blocks per set, and are 40th in the nation. WVU is outblocking its opponents, 198.5-155.5.
Junior outside hitter Katelyn Evans has played in all but one set for the Mountaineers this season. She leads the team with 245 kills, averaging 3.14 per set to rank 10th in the league. The Palmdale, California, native has recorded double-digit kills in 13 matches, including nine of the last 12.
Texas Tech enters the second round of conference action having already matched its Big 12 win total from 2017. Of note, Tech is one of five teams tied for third in the Big 12 with a .500 record.
The Red Raiders rank second in the league in opponent hitting percentage (.184) and third in hitting percentage (.244). Emily Hill leads TTU offensively, averaging 3.17 kills per set to rank ninth in the conference. Emerson Solano also is averaging 4.13 digs per set to lead the Red Raiders defensively.
Of note, the Mountaineers are three wins away from collecting their 700th win in program history. West Virginia currently holds a 697-735 all-time record since its inaugural season in 1974.
Looking ahead, West Virginia will close out the month of October at home with a Big 12 match against Kansas on Wednesday, Oct. 31. First serve is set for 6 p.m. ET at the WVU Coliseum. Fans can don their Halloween costume for free admission. Attendees also are invited to enter a costume contest.
