NORMAN, Okla. – Unable to overcome an Oklahoma offense hitting .410, the West Virginia University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to the Sooners on Saturday afternoon, at McCasland Field House, in Norman, Oklahoma. The Mountaineers (9-12, 1-7) fell to the Sooners (12-8, 4-4) in set scores of 25-18, 25-12 and 25-18.
Junior outside hitter Katelyn Evans led the way with eight kills, while junior right side hitter Natania Levak, freshman outside hitter Kristin Lux and freshman middle blocker Kristina Jordan each added five kills in the match.
Freshman setter Lacey Zerwas dished out 23 of the team's 24 assists, adding seven digs. Sophomore defensive specialist Alexa Hasting and classmate Ava Richards also dug seven balls in the match, followed by Evans, with six.
West Virginia finished the contest with 29 kills, 35 digs and three team blocks.
Both squads exchanged points early in set one before Oklahoma racked up six straight points for a 19-13 advantage. OU notched a service error on the next ball, but quickly added two more points on the board for the 21-14 lead. West Virginia used its final timeout of the frame to regroup, with Levak and Jordan teaming up for the stop out of the break. A late solo block from Jordan, followed by an ace, cut the Mountaineers' deficit to five at 23-18, but it wasn't enough, as a pair of WVU attacking errors helped OU seal the deal for a 25-18 win and 1-0 match lead.
The Sooners rolled to a 9-1 lead to start the second set and never looked back. Lux was able to put down a trio of kills midway through the set, as the Mountaineers trailed by six at 12-6. However, a pair of 3-0 scoring runs from OU put the Sooners on top for good at 18-7. Sophomore middle blocker Katie DeMeo and Evans each added a kill, as Hasting later served up an ace to put the score at 22-11. Oklahoma then capitalized on two Mountaineer miscues to reach set point, claiming the 25-12 win off a kill for the 2-0 lead in the match.
The teams traded points to start the third, as a kill from Evans brought the Mountaineers within two, down 7-5. However, a 4-0 scoring run from the Sooners increased their lead to nine at 19-10. West Virginia used a late 4-0 scoring streak of its own to come within five at 23-18, but the Mountaineers just couldn't recover, as the Sooners put down back-to-back kills for the 25-18 win in the set and 3-0 victory in the match.
Of note, the Mountaineers are three wins away from collecting their 700th win in program history. West Virginia currently holds a 697-735 all-time record since its inaugural season in 1974.
Looking ahead, West Virginia will close out the month of October at home with a pair of Big 12 matches, as the squad takes on Texas Tech on Wednesday, Oct. 24 and Kansas on Wednesday, Oct. 31. First serve for both matches is set for 6 p.m. ET at the WVU Coliseum.
