FAIRBORN, Ohio – The West Virginia University volleyball team treks to its third tournament of the season this weekend when the Mountaineers travel to Fairborn, Ohio, to compete in the Holiday Inn Invitational at Wright State's McLin Gymnasium on Friday and Saturday.
WVU (4-2, 0-0) opens play on Friday against Tennessee Tech (2-4, 0-0) at 11 a.m. before taking on Harvard (0-3,0-0) at 6 p.m. The team will finish the tournament on Saturday at 3 p.m. against host Wright State (2-5).
"I'd like to see us build on what we did last weekend," coach Reed Sunahara said. "We need to keep getting better and progress into the Big 12 season. We'll take it one match at a time."
West Virginia will square off with Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles for just the third time in program history on Friday. In a series that began in 1982, WVU holds a 2-1 lead over the Golden Eagles. The two last met in 2004 with the Mountaineers dropping a five-set match.
WVU will meet Harvard for the first time on Friday. West Virginia is 10-10 all-time against the Ivy League and most recently played Dartmouth in 2016.
Saturday will be the ninth meeting between the Mountaineers and the Raiders, and the first since 2012. The Raiders hold a 5-3 lead in the series, which began in 1982.
Several freshmen will get the opportunity to play in their home state this weekend as three Mountaineers are Ohio natives. Freshman middle blocker Katie DeMeo is a native of Troy who played for Troy High and Elite Volleyball. Freshman libero Alexa Hasting hails from Plain City, where she played for Alder High and Elite VBTC. Freshman middle blocker Chloe Klusman is from Cincinnati and played for Mother of Mercy and Tri-State Elite.
Klusman will see a familiar face on the opposite side of the net during WVU's tilt with Wright State. Klusman's cousin, Katie Klusman, leads the Raiders with 3.08 kills per set. Both played for Mother of Mercy High School in Cincinnati.
West Virginia is coming off a 2-1 weekend in Minneapolis. The Mountaineers suffered just their second setback of the season to then-No. 2 Minnesota, 3-0, on Friday before rebounding to defeat Tennessee, 3-0, and UTSA, 3-1. The Golden Gophers have since moved up to the No. 1 spot in the AVCA Coaches Poll.
Sophomore outside hitters Payton Caffrey and Katelyn Evans earned mention on the Diet Coke Classic All-Tournament team for their play in Minneapolis last weekend. Caffrey averaged 3.90 kills per set and 2.70 digs per set on the weekend. Evans hit .293 with 3.40 kills per set and seven blocks.
