West Virginia Defeats Fairfield in Straight Sets

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (5-5, 0-0 Big 12) defeated Fairfield, 3-0 on Friday night in it's second sweep of the season at the Leo D. Mahoney Arena in Fairfield, Connecticut.
West Virginia took the win with scores of 25-21, 25-23 and 25-22. Friday's match marks the program's first win over the Stags, evening the series record, 1-1.
The Mountaineers held the Stags to a .250 hitting percentage, while totaling 50 kills, 49 assist and 46 digs. WVU led with a season high clip of .328%.
Redshirt junior outside hitter Cassidy Tanton yet again led the West Virginia offense with 15 kills, while hitting .394 percent.
Additionally, sophomore middle blocker Maddy McGath had a standout night, collecting 12 kills on 15 attempts for a .733 clip. Additionally, McGath added five total blocks and four digs.
Fairfield started off the first set with an early, 5-2 lead. A pair of kills from sophomore setter Alexis Finnvold and McGath along with an error from the Stags, tied the score at nine all. The score went on to be knotted five more times, with the last tie at 19. WVU changed the momentum with a late 6-0 scoring run, leading 23-19. A kill from senior outside hitter Hailey Green would give West Virginia set one, 25-21.
A service ace from Tanton and a kill from junior middle blocker Laila Ibrahim would give the Mountaineers an early, 3-1 advantage in set two. West Virginia continued dominating, leading by as many as five points, 9-4. Fairfield cut into the WVU lead with a 7-1 run, before a Fairfield error would tie the score at 11. Both teams would chip in points as the score went on to be tied until the 22nd point of the set. A pair of Fairfield errors and a kill from McGath would give the Mountaineers the set, 25-23.
The score was once again tied at three a piece, kicking off the third and final set. A 4-0 run, capped with a pair of kills from Tanton let WVU lead, 8-5. The Stags responded with a run of their own, knotting the score at 10. As points were traded on both sides, West Virginia took charge at the end of the set, 21-18. The Mountaineers fended off a Fairfield run, as McGath secured set three with a kill, 25-22.
West Virginia concludes non-conference play on Saturday, Sept. 21 against Binghamton. First serve is slated for 2 p.m. ET, inside of the Rose Hill Gym in the Bronx, New York.
