
Mountaineers Upend Binghamton on Saturday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (6-5, 0-0 Big 12) defeated Binghamton on Saturday, 3-2 in the Bronx, New York with scores of 33-35, 25-20, 23-25, 25-17 and 15-12.
The Mountaineers held Binghamton to hit only .198%, while WVU collected 75 kills on a .320 clip. Additionally, West Virginia collected 17 total blocks and 13 service aces.
Redshirt junior outside hitter Cassidy Tanton led the Mountaineers with a career tying 22 kills, while hitting .356%. Tanton notched her seventh double-double of the season, with 14 digs.
Junior outside hitter Quincey Coyle tallied a career high of 21 kills, while collecting her third double-double of the season with 10 digs. Sophomore middle blocker sophomore Maddy McGath led with a career best of eight total blocks, along with 16 kills on a .560 clip.
Sophomore setter Alexis Finnvold added another career high on the night, totaling 55 assists.
Senior outside hitter Hailey Green struck first for WVU in the first set, knotting the score early at one. A 3-0 scoring run would give West Virginia the lead, 6-4 for the first time in the match. The score would go on to be tied 19 more times throughout the set. With points coming from each side of the net, a pair of kills would give Binghamton the first set, 35-33.
A service ace from Finnvold would kick thing off for WVU in the second set, leading 1-0. A 4-0 run would give West Virginia momentum, as the score was tied at 14. The Mountaineers would go off on another run, 5-0, taking a dominant 21-16 lead. A kill and an ace from Tanton, followed by a kill from Coyle would secure the second, 25-20 for WVU.
The Mountaineers took an early, 6-2 lead to begin the third set, and held the lead until Binghamton tied the score at 10. A 4-0 run would give the Bearcats the upper hand, as they led 18-13. A pair of kills from Coyle and McGath would get WVU within two, 23-21. Binghamton went on to take the third with a kill, 25-23.
A 3-0 run would give the Bearcats an early lead in the fourth, which they would hold onto to until a 5-0 West Virginia run would change the scoring possession. The Mountaineers took a 6-5 lead and did not trail throughout the rest of the set. A slew of six unanswered points shut down the Bearcats, 15-7. West Virginia continued to clobber Binghamton, adding another 5-0 run to lead 23-13. A block from Coyle and McGath would give set four to WVU, 25-17.
Binghamton led once again in the fifth and final set, 3-1. A kill from Tanton would even the score at seven, followed by a 3-0 Bearcat run. A kill from Coyle sparked the West Virginia win, as a 6-0 run would secure set five, 15-12 for the Mountaineers.
West Virginia will open home and Big 12 play on Wednesday, Sept. 25, facing off against Cincinnati. First serve is set for 7 p.m. ET, inside the Coliseum in Morgantown.
