
Mountaineers Fall to Cincinnati in Home Opener

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (6-6, 0-1 Big 12) fell to Cincinnati, 3-0 on Wednesday night inside the WVU Coliseum in Morgantown. The Bearcats claimed the victory with scores of 15-25, 23-25 and 16-25.
West Virginia led the floor in kills, collecting 42. Redshirt junior outside hitter Cassidy Tanton led the squad with 15 kills, hitting .323 percent.
Sophomore setter Alexis Finnvold dished 32 assists, while graduate student libero Sydney Reed collected 17 digs.
Tanton struck first in the match, giving West Virginia a 1-0 lead, to start the first set. The Mountaineers held the advantage until a WVU error knotted the score at six. A 4-0 scoring run from Cincinnati gave the Bearcats an 9-6 lead. A kill from junior outside hitter Quincey Coyle got the score within one point, as WVU trailed 11-10. Cincinnati went on with six unanswered points, and the 19-11 advantage. Benefiting from kills and WVU errors, UC took set one, 25-15.
West Virginia once again led early, 2-1 kicking off set two with a pair of kills from Coyle and Tanton. As points rained in on each side of the net, a trio of kills from Tanton would give WVU the 10-8 lead. The Mountaineers held onto the advantage, until a 3-0 UC run gave the Bearcats a 15-14 upper hand. The score went on to be tied six more times, with a kill from Tanton knotting it up at 23. UC would charge on, adding two kills to take the second set, 25-23.
The Bearcats wasted no time in set three, taking a 3-0 advantage. A pair of Tanton kills and a UC error tied the score at six. An ace from Tanton paired with two kills from senior outside hitter Hailey Green would once again knot the score at 12. Three straight Cincinnati kills sparked the squad, as the Bearcats went on to close the third and final set, 25-16.
West Virginia will travel to Iowa State on Sept. 28, for their first conference road trip of the season. First serve is slated for 3 p.m. ET, inside the Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.
