
Utah Hands West Virginia its First Sweep of the Season

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University volleyball team (9-6, 2-3 Big 12) fell to Utah in straight sets on Thursday evening at the Jon M. Huntsman Center. The Utes won by set scores of 25-13, 27-25 and 25-20.

Utah (12-4, 4-1 Big 12) dropped in 12 aces, including five in each of the opening two sets, while hitting .347 to lead the Mountaineers to their first sweep of the season.

The Utes came out firing in the first set, jumping out to a 4-1 lead and never looking back. With no ties or lead changes throughout the frame, Utah closed out the set, 25-13, to take a 1-0 lead. The Utes hit .545 in the opening set while holding WVU to .091.

After struggling in the opening set, the Mountaineers responded in the second, hitting .419 with 15 kills. WVU battled through 13 ties and three lead changes, pushing the set beyond 25 points. However, five more Utah service aces were the recipe to a 27-25 victory.

Utah took an early 5-1 lead in the third set after the Mountaineers recorded the only tie of the frame at 1 apiece. The Utes looked to close out the set at 24-16 before a late West Virginia push forced a timeout at 24-20. That was until senior outside hitter Kamryn Gibadlo tallied her 15th kill of the night out of the break to seal the match.

Senior outside hitter Nina Horning led the Mountaineers with nine kills and added one ace. Sophomore right side Anna Barr finished with six kills, while senior middle blocker Maddy McGath recorded five.

Senior setter Alexis Finnvold paced the offense with 15 assists, while freshman setter Lauren Duncan continued to impress from the service line with three aces.

Freshman defensive specialist/libero Reagan Turk led the defense with eight digs. Graduate student middle blocker Sophia Fallah led the Mountaineers with two blocks in her first career start.

Gibadlo hit .481 with 15 kills on 27 attempts, while junior outside hitter Levani Falatea led the Utes with five aces.

Freshman libero Sierra Grizzle recorded a match-high 10 digs, and sophomore middle blocker Katelynn Field totaled four blocks.

WVU recorded 30 kills and hit .205 for the match, while Utah finished with 47 kills and a .347 hitting percentage. The Utes also held a 6-4 advantage in total blocks.

West Virginia is now 0-3 all-time against Utah. WVU head coach Jen Greeny moves to 11-14 against the Utes.

The Mountaineers head north to face No. 17 BYU on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 8:30 p.m. ET at the George Albert Smith Fieldhouse in Provo, Utah.
