MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University volleyball freshman outside hitter Macie Smith has been named to the Big 12 Starting Seven of the Week following a record-breaking performance over the weekend.
Â
The Big 12 Starting Seven of the Week consists of the four players of the week and three additional student-athletes who receive the most votes.
Â
The Cicero, Indiana, native led the Big 12 and ranked No. 5 among Power Four players in hitting percentage last week, recording 15 kills with zero errors on 27 attempts. She became the first freshman in program history to record 15 or more kills with zero errors in a match and just the fifth player overall.
Â
Her .556 hitting percentage contributed to the team's .374 mark for the match, the best hitting percentage by any WVU team in a Big 12 match.
Â
Smith also tallied three service aces, tying for No. 4 in the conference, as the Mountaineers defeated Arizona for the first time in program history and earned their most conference wins since 2021.
Â
She recorded career highs in kills, hitting percentage, points, aces and digs, totaling nine digs. The match against Arizona marked her seventh this season with double-digit kills.
Â
Smith is the second WVU volleyball player to earn a Big 12 weekly honor this season, joining freshman middle blocker Mirjam Karoliine Kask, who was named to the Starting Seven on Sept. 8.
Â
Up next, the Mountaineers (11-8, 4-5 Big 12) travel to Ames, Iowa, on Friday, Oct. 30, to face Iowa State at 7 p.m. ET inside Hilton Coliseum.
