MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 13-ranked West Virginia University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to No. 1 Texas on Friday evening, at the WVU Coliseum, in Morgantown. The Mountaineers (7-7) fell to the Longhorns (14-0) in set scores of 25-15, 25-8 and 25-20.
"They are really good," sixth-year coach Reed Sunahara said. "I think if we compete like the way we did in the third set, we would have a better chance. We just waited; or we didn't wait, they just put us in that situation. They are that good, but I was happy with how we competed. I am not happy with the result, obviously, but hopefully, this will bring some momentum into what we do next week against OU."
Senior middle blocker Briana Lynch and junior outside hitter Kristin Lux tied for the team lead in kills with eight swings apiece. Junior outside hitter Natali Petrova added five kills to the scoresheet, while sophomore middle blocker Emmy Ogogor recorded four in the final frame to hit .250 on the evening.
Junior setter Lacey Zerwas dished out 26 assists to go along with eight digs.
Senior libero Alexa Hasting dug a team-best 11 balls, followed by classmate Lindsay Proctor with 10. Lynch led the team's defensive efforts at the net with a pair of block assists, while Zerwas and Lux each had one.
Additionally, freshman outside hitter/defensive specialist Skye Stokes led the Mountaineers at the service line tonight, serving up a pair of aces, followed by Proctor with one.
The Mountaineers finished the contest with 28 kills, 46 digs and two team blocks.
The Longhorns rolled to a 20-13 lead to start the first set and never looked back. Lynch came up with a huge swing out of a WVU timeout, but it wasn't enough, as UT scored five of the last six points in the opening set for the 25-15 victory and 1-0 match advantage.
The second frame started similar to the first, with the Longhorns using a series of scoring runs to gain a 10-point advantage at 18-8. West Virginia took a timeout to regroup, but the Mountaineers couldn't find the momentum they needed, as Texas claimed the last seven points in the frame for the 25-8 win and 2-0 match lead.
The teams traded points to start the third, as a kill from Lynch tied the frame at 11-all. However, consecutive kills from Texas, followed by an ace, forced West Virginia into an early timeout, down three. A late kill from Petrova kept the Mountaineers within three at 21-18, but West Virginia couldn't overcome its deficit, as Texas took four of the last six points for the 25-20 victory in the set and 3-0 victory in the match.
Next up, West Virginia will close its 2020 fall slate in Norman, Oklahoma, as the Mountaineers take on the Sooners in a two-match series on Nov. 19-20. Both contests are set to begin at 7 p.m. ET.
