MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team swept Duquesne, 3-0, in its opening match of the 2019 Mountaineer Invitational, held inside the WVU Coliseum, on Friday evening. The Mountaineers (6-4) took the match from the Dukes (4-7) in set scores of 25-23, 25-22 and 25-15.
"It was a good win for us," fifth-year coach Reed Sunahara said. "I thought Duquesne played well, but our middles did a nice job and kept us in the game. The first two sets were a little dicey, but we pulled out the win in the first two sets and played a lot smoother in the third."
Redshirt junior middle blocker Audrey Adams had a career night, posting a career-high 16 kills on 25 attacks for a .560 hitting efficiency. The Carmel, Indiana, native also added a team-high four block assists and accounted for two of the six Mountaineer' service aces on the evening.
Junior defensive specialist Alexa Hasting led the floor defense with 16 digs. Hasting also served up a team-high three service aces in the match.
Sophomore setter Lacey Zerwas assisted on 34 of WVU's 46 kills, as the team notched a .217 hitting percentage. Duquesne recorded 33 kills on 96 attacks for a .198 hitting efficiency.
West Virginia used a 3-0 scoring run for the 18-13 advantage midway through the first. Duquesne did not back down though, scoring six of the next eight points to come within one at 20-19. WVU used a timeout to regroup, as the Mountaineers threw down back-to-back kills out of the stoppage to increase their lead to three at 22-19. Junior middle blocker Briana Lynch added a kill, followed by sophomore outside hitter Kristin Lux, as West Virginia reached set point at 24-22. A Duquesne kill extended the set, but Lux found the floor once again, as WVU claimed the 25-23 first-set victory.
West Virginia took a 2-0 match lead with a 25-22 win in set two. The Mountaineers trailed the Dukes, 14-8, before scoring six consecutive points to tie the set at 14-14 midway through the frame. A DU kill halted the Mountaineers' run, but another scoring surge pushed WVU's lead to five at 21-16. Duquesne capitalized on a pair of Mountaineer miscues to remain in the set at 21-19. WVU called a timeout, as Adams put one through the defenders out of the break to increase the Mountaineers' lead to four at 23-19. An attacking error from Duquesne brought West Virginia to set point, but the Dukes answered with back-to-back points of their own to cut their deficit to two at 24-22. However, a DU service error gave WVU the 25-22 win, putting the Mountaineers ahead 2-0 in the match.
West Virginia jumped out to a 20-12 lead in the third set and never looked back. Duquesne took a timeout, but Adams served up her second ace of the night to push WVU's lead to nine at 22-13. Consecutive kills brought the Mountaineers to set point at 24-14, Lynch came up with a huge swing, winning the set at 25-15, to record West Virginia's fifth sweep of the season.
