"Texas is really good," fifth-year coach Reed Sunahara said. "We have to play well and compete hard, and we'll see what happens."
Saturday marks the first match of the season between the two teams, as the Mountaineers (10-8, 1-4) and the Longhorns (11-2, 5-0) first met in August 2012. Texas currently holds a 14-0 all-time advantage in the series. However, WVU took then-No. 6 Texas to five sets for the first time since 2014 on Sept. 23, 2017, at the WVU Coliseum.
West Virginia most recently capped its nonconference schedule with a 3-1 win over Morehead State on Tuesday, at Johnson Arena, in Morehead, Kentucky. The Mountaineers rolled to the victory in set scores of 25-21, 23-25, 25-23 and 25-11. With the win, WVU finished the season with a 9-4 record in nonconference play and is 47-24 all-time in nonleague matches under Sunahara.
Senior outside hitter Katelyn Evans, the WVU co-Student-Athlete of the Week, notched another 20-kill performance at Morehead State, posting 21 kills for a .370 hitting efficiency. The Palmdale, California, native collected her sixth double-digit match of the season and fifth 20-kill performance of her career. Sophomore setter Lacey Zerwas also dished out 42 assists and dug 14 balls in the match, recording her sixth double-double of the season.
As a team, WVU is hitting .209 and averaging 12.7 kills per set. Sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Kristina Jordan paces WVU's offense, averaging 3.91 points per set, 3.24 kills per set and 0.38 service aces per set. Zerwas quarterbacks the Mountaineer offense, ranking fourth in the Big 12 with 10.10 assists per set.
Junior defensive specialist Alexa Hasting anchors WVU's floor defense, averaging 4.21 digs per set to rank second in the league. Hasting is on pace to etch her name in the WVU single-season record book. Her average of 4.21 digs per set would rank No. 3 all-time by a Mountaineer junior and ninth overall in a single season in program history. Additionally, she boasts 966 digs in her career, 34 shy of 1,000.
Texas sits at 11-2 on the season, with its only losses coming against Stanford and Rice. Of note, both setbacks were determined in five sets on the road. Following a week off from competition, the Longhorns most recently topped Oklahoma in three sets on Oct. 12, at Gregory Gym, in Austin, Texas.
UT leads the nation in hitting percentage, hitting .326 on the season. Senior outside hitter Micaya White paces the Longhorns' offense with 4.04 kills per set and has five double-doubles on the year. Defensively, sophomore middle blocker Brionne Butler leads the team's blocking efforts with 1.10 blocks per set and is tied for seventh in the Big 12. She also leads the league with a .595 hitting efficiency.
Looking ahead, the Mountaineers will hit the road for a pair of Big 12 matches in Texas. West Virginia on TCU in an 8 p.m. ET league tilt on Thursday, Oct. 24, followed by a 2 p.m. ET matchup against Baylor on Saturday, Oct. 26.
