MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After grinding out its second consecutive five-set victory on Friday, the West Virginia University volleyball team did not miss a beat Saturday morning, earning a 3-0 win over Penn at the WVU Coliseum. The Mountaineers (6-5) swept the Quakers (3-8) in set scores of 25-14, 25-17 and 25-21 in their second match of the 2018 Mountaineer Classic.
With the win, West Virginia earned its third sweep of the season.
Freshman outside hitter Kristin Lux finished the match with 13 kills for a career-high hitting percentage of .579. Junior outside hitter Katelyn Evans also was good for double-digit kills, with 11, while sophomore middle blocker Katie DeMeo added seven.
DeMeo also posted six total blocks, while Evans pitched in with four block assists. Freshman defensive specialist Marielena Somoza led the floor defense with a career-high seven digs, while freshman setter Lacey Zerwas dished out 30 assists on the day.
Additionally, sophomore defensive specialist Lindsay Proctor and Zerwas each recorded a pair of service aces for WVU. The Mountaineers hit a season-high .299 with 39 kills and nine team blocks. Penn recorded 31 kills on 83 attacks with four team blocks.
Hitting .435 with 12 kills, West Virginia claimed the first set, 25-14, for the 1-0 match advantage. The Mountaineers jumped out to an 8-2 lead before the Quakers called their first timeout of the frame. Both squads traded points out of the stoppage, but Penn capitalized on a pair of WVU errors, cutting its deficit to three at 11-8. The Mountaineers countered with a 3-0 scoring streak of their own, pushing their lead to six at 14-8. Another 4-0 run put the Mountaineers up for good at 21-11. Penn's Madison Goldstein halted West Virginia's scoring streak with a pair of kills, but it wasn't enough, as the Mountaineers collected four of the last five points for the 25-14 victory and the 1-0 match lead.
The Mountaineers notched four points in a row for an early 7-6 advantage in set two and never looked back. Proctor pushed WVU's lead to 13-9 following a service ace, as Penn called a timeout. Freshman middle blocker Kristina Jordan and Lux each put down a pair of kills, as the Mountaineers took a 20-12 advantage down the stretch, forcing the Quakers to take its second timeout of the stanza. Penn came within five following a pair of kills from Raven Sulaimon at 22-17, but DeMeo found the middle of the floor to halt Penn's run. WVU then capitalized on a pair of Quaker attacking errors to end the set at 25-17 and put the Mountaineers ahead 2-0 in the match.
After playing to a 19-19 tie in the third set, DeMeo placed one through the pins to put WVU ahead. However, a Goldstein kill and a Mountaineer attacking error put the Quakers back on top at 21-20, forcing West Virginia to take a late timeout. Lux came out of the break firing on all cylinders, notching back-to-back kills to give WVU the one-point edge at 22-21. Penn took a timeout to regroup, but the Mountaineers capitalized off a pair of Quaker attacking errors to reach set point. Somoza then served up an ace for the 25-21 third-set win, as well as the 3-0 match victory.
