MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University volleyball coach Reed Sunahara announced Wednesday that Macy McElhaney (Beaver, Pennsylvania) has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Mountaineers for the 2018 season.
"Macy is an athletic, front row player who adds versatility to our offense," Sunahara said. "She has experience playing across the net, and she brings great energy to the court, which fits the culture of WVU volleyball. I'm excited to have Macy cap this year's signing class, and I can't wait for everyone to arrive in Morgantown this summer, so we can get to work."
A native of Beaver, Pennsylvania, McElhaney competed for Beaver Area High under the direction of Charlene Horwatt. She was a three-time varsity letterwinner, helping guide the Bobcats to the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League (WPIAL) Championship match two years in a row. The squad claimed the program's first-ever WPIAL title her senior year, as she led the Bobcats with 26 kills, 12 blocks, 14 digs and three aces to take down the two-time defending champion.
McElhaney was crowned the Beaver County Times (BCT) Volleyball Player of the Year twice in her career (2015-16). She also was a first-team All-WPIAL honoree as well as a first-team all-section and first-team all-state member for three straight years (2015-17).
Additionally, McElhaney was named to the 2017 Girls Junior National Championships (GJNC) All-Tournament Team as well as the European Global Challenge All-Tournament Team. The 6-foot-1 outside hitter also competed for the girls' track and field team in the high jump event.
Daughter of Bryce McElhaney and Elizabeth Jones, she plans on majoring in multidisciplinary studies at West Virginia.
"I chose WVU because of the university environment, the educational opportunities, and of course, because of the exciting things I saw happening with the volleyball program," McElhaney said. "I also saw great relationships both on and off the court, and it was a program and a school that I wanted to be a part of!"
