MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to Oklahoma, 3-0, Saturday afternoon, at the WVU Coliseum, in Morgantown. OU took the match in set scores of 29-27, 25-21 and 25-17.
"I thought we played some good volleyball at times," fourth-year coach Reed Sunahara said. "I thought we did some nice things and executed at a high level, but we weren't consistent enough. That's why we fell short. I thought we played well enough to win in the first set, but we didn't hit well enough in the second and third. It was tough for us to score points. We have to keep getting better, and we will."
Sophomore middle blocker Katie DeMeo led WVU with nine kills, hitting a team-best .421 and adding four blocks in the match. Junior outside hitter Katelyn Evans and freshman outside hitter Kristin Lux each had eight kills apiece, as the Mountaineers (11-17, 2-12) posted 39 kills and nine team blocks in the loss.
Junior right side hitter Natania Levak and freshman middle blocker Kristina Jordan tied for the team lead in totals blocks, with five, while sophomore defensive specialist Alexa Hasting notched a team-high 12 digs .
Freshman setter Lacey Zerwas dished out 33 assists, and junior defensive specialist Gabrielle Cuckovich and Jordan each recorded one service ace on the day.
Oklahoma (16-11, 8-7) hit .212 with 43 kills and 10 team blocks in the win. Alyssa Enneking led the Sooners offense with 15 kills, while Keyton Kinley had a team-high 25 digs.
In an extended first set, WVU couldn't put things away and dropped the frame, 29-27. Oklahoma jumped out to a five-point lead before West Virginia used a 3-0 scoring streak to come within one, down 16-15. Both teams exchanged points down the stretch before the Sooners posted back-to-back kills for the 21-19 advantage. An OU kill brought up set point at 24-22, but Levak and DeMeo teamed up for the Mountaineer stop, as Lux put down a kill to knot the score at 24-all. Oklahoma took a timeout, serving set point four more times out of the stoppage. With the set tied at 27 points apiece, OU answered with a quick kill from Morgan Miller, ending the set on a WVU attacking error to take a 1-0 match lead.
Attempting to carry some momentum into the second stanza, WVU used a trio of kills from Evans to cut its deficit to one at 9-8. Oklahoma scored four in a row for the 14-9 lead, but West Virginia benefited from four straight OU attacking errors to stay within two at 16-14. The Sooners called a timeout to regroup, but the Mountaineers tied the set at 18-all following another attacking error from the Sooners. Oklahoma then scored five of the next six points for the 23-19 lead. Evans found the floor to keep West Virginia within two at 23-21, but a Miller kill and a WVU attacking error rounded out the set, as the Sooners walked away with a 25-21 victory and 2-0 match lead.
Both teams traded points early in the third before the Sooners collected four in a row for the 18-13 advantage. A kill from Levak halted the Sooners' run, but Oklahoma did not back down, adding three more points on the board for a 21-15 lead. Freshman outside hitter Rhyenne Filisi and DeMeo each added a kill late in the set, but OU sealed the deal with a WVU attacking error for the 25-17 victory and 3-0 triumph in the match.
Of note, the Mountaineers are one win away from collecting their 700th win in program history. West Virginia currently holds a 699-740 all-time record since its inaugural season in 1974.
Looking ahead, the Mountaineers will swing through Texas for a pair of Big 12 matches to close the regular season. West Virginia takes on Baylor on Wednesday, Nov. 21, followed by a match at No. 5 Texas on Saturday, Nov. 24.
