
Mountaineers Fall in Four to Northern Iowa

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team (3-2, 0-0 Big 12) fell to Northern Iowa on Saturday night, 3-1 with scores of 29-27, 26-24, 25-15 and 25-12 inside of the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
West Virginia was once again led by junior outside hitter Quincey Coyle, who collected her second double-double of the season with 12 kills and 10 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Maddy McGath contributed 12 kills, hitting a .320 clip paired with seven total blocks.
Sophomore setter Alexis Finnvold dished out 42 assists, while graduate student libero Sydney Reed added 11 digs.
Northern Iowa struck first with a kill in set one, taking the early 1-0 lead. A kill from Coyle tied the score up at three, followed by a 3-0 WVU run to give the Mountaineers the 6-3 advantage. The Mountaineers held onto the lead until the Panthers knotted the score at 19 all. The score went on to be tied five more times, before WVU closed out the first set, 29-27. The Mountaineers collected 21 digs, along with 19 kills on a .348 clip in set one, marking the squad's best performance throughout the match.
West Virginia trailed early in set two, as UNI took the 7-4 lead. The Mountaineers accounted for a 4-1 scoring run late in the set, clobbering at the Panthers 22-20 lead. After two set points, the score was tied up at 24 before a pair of kills gave the Panthers set two, 26-24.
The Panthers once again took the early advantage as WVU trailed 10-5. A trio of kills from McGath and redshirt junior outside hitter Cassidy Tanton looked promising for the Mountaineers, as they trailed 21-13. UNI persisted on, capturing the third set 25-15.
WVU kicked off the fourth set with a 3-1 lead, after a block from McGath and junior middle blocker Lailia Ibrahim. The score would be tied at four, five and six points before a 4-0 run from the Panthers switched the lead to 10-6, UNI. The Mountaineers were held silent until a kill from senior outside hitter Hailey Green and a block from Ibrahim and McGath let the Mountaineers trail, 18-10. The Panthers went on to close the fourth and final set with a 5-1 run, 25-12.
West Virginia concludes the NDSU-UND Tournament on Sunday, facing off against North Dakota at noon ET inside of the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center in Grand Forks, N.D.
