SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Despite a career-high 30-kill performance from sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Kristina Jordan, the West Virginia University volleyball team dropped its first match of the 2019 season at San Diego State on Friday evening, held inside Peterson Gym on SDSU's campus. The Mountaineers (4-1) fell to the Aztecs (3-1) in set scores of 21-25, 16-25, 25-22, 25-16 and 15-13.
Jordan, a native of San Diego, paced WVU with 30 kills on 57 attacks for a .439 hitting efficiency. Jordan's 30-kill performance marked the first time a Mountaineer scored 30 or more kills in a game since Morgan Montgomery posted 31 vs. Marshall on Sept. 15, 2015. Jordan also added a trio of digs and a pair of blocks on the evening.
Junior middle blocker Briana Lynch and sophomore outside hitter Kristin Lux rounded out the Mountaineers in double figures with 11 kills apiece.
Defensively, Lux led the team's blocking efforts with six, while redshirt junior middle blocker Audrey Adams and Lynch each added four. Junior defensive specialist Alexa Hasting had a team-high 15 digs in the match.
Sophomore setter Lacey Zerwas dished out a career-high 55 assists to go along with the Mountaineers' lone service ace on the evening.
West Virginia posted a season-high 65 kills for a .256 hitting efficiency, as well as 47 digs and 10 team blocks in the loss. The Aztecs had 63 kills, 50 digs and 10 team blocks. Victoria O'Sullivan led SDSU's offense with 22 kills, while Loren Teter had a team-high 15 digs.
Trailing 11-7 in set one, the Mountaineers capitalized on nine straight points for the 16-11 advantage. The Aztecs hung in there, though, scoring five-of-six to come within one at 19-18. West Virginia continued to chip away, with Lux and Adams finding the floor for the 21-19 edge. San Diego State later took a timeout, down 23-20, but Jordan put down a kill out of the break to bring the Mountaineers to set point. The Aztecs added a kill of their own to extend the set, but Jordan answered with another huge swing, totaling her eighth kill of the frame, to claim the 25-21 first-set victory and the 1-0 match advantage.
West Virginia jumped out to a 20-11 lead in set two and never looked back. San Diego State capitalized on a pair of Mountaineer miscues, as O'Sullivan came up with a pair of kills late in the set to cut its deficit to eight at 22-15. Jordan put down a kill, as Zerwas followed with an ace to bring WVU to set point at 24-15. A Mountaineer attacking error kept the Aztecs' hopes alive, but it didn't take long for Jordan to find the floor once again, as the Mountaineers won the second set, 25-16, to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Mountaineers momentum started to fade in the third, though, as the Aztecs won back-to-back sets, forcing WVU to play in its first five-set match of the season.
Down 11-7 in the fifth, West Virginia called a timeout to regroup. Two consecutive kills out of the stoppage brought the Mountaineers within two, down 11-9, as the squads continued to exchange points down the stretch. West Virginia came within one at 13-12 following another kill from Jordan. San Diego State then used a timeout, reaching set and match point out of the stoppage with a kill from O'Sullivan. Senior right-side hitter Erin Slinde and Lynch teamed up for a Mountaineer block to extend the set, but it wasn't enough, as SDSU put down a kill to end the set in its favor at 15-13, walking away with the 3-2 match victory.
WVU will finish the three-day tournament with a 2 p.m. ET match against Arizona, who is receiving votes in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Poll, on Saturday, at Jenny Craig Pavilion on the University of San Diego's campus. The contest against the Wildcats will air live on Flo Volleyball. Live stats can be found on WVUsports.com.
