SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The West Virginia University volleyball team dropped a 3-1 match to Arizona in its final contest of the 2019 SDSU/USD Tournament on Saturday, at Jenny Craig Pavilion on the University of San Diego's campus. The Mountaineers (4-2) fell to the Wildcats (3-2) in set scores of 30-32, 25-14, 25-12 and 25-19.
Sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Kristina Jordan led the way with 11 kills, while junior middle blocker Briana Lynch rounded out the Mountaineers in double figures with 10.
Sophomore setter Lacey Zerwas assisted on 36 of the team's 41 kills, adding 11 digs.
Junior defensive specialist Alexa Hasting dug a team-high 19 balls, while sophomore defensive specialist Keatan Broughton recorded a season-high 12 digs on the day.
Redshirt junior Audrey Adams led the Mountaineers' blocking efforts with four block assists, followed by sophomore outside hitter Kristin Lux, Lynch and Jordan with three blocks each.
West Virginia finished the contest with 41 kills, 67 digs and 10 team blocks.
In an extended first set, West Virginia recorded 14 kills and six team blocks to claim the 32-30 first-set victory over Arizona. WVU got in a rhythm early on, using a trio of 3-0 scoring streaks for a 14-9 advantage. However, Arizona scored three straight points of its own to come within two at 14-12. A kill from Adams halted the Wildcats' run, but four consecutive kills from UA forced WVU to call a timeout, trailing by one at 16-15. The Mountaineers did not back down, though, as both teams battled through several ties down the stretch. With the set tied at 22-all, Lynch and Lux each came up with huge swings to help the Mountaineers reach set point at 24-22. However, UA posted a trio of kills to extend the frame, serving set point for the first time at 25-24. West Virginia would serve set point three more times before winning the stanza, 32-30, on a solo block from Lynch to take the 1-0 match lead.
UA jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in the second set and never looked back. The Mountaineers used a timeout to regroup, scoring three consecutive points to come within two at 10-8. The Wildcats picked up the pace late in the set, though, scoring seven of the next 10 points for the 17-11 advantage. West Virginia eventually called its second timeout of the frame, but could not put forth any momentum, as Arizona capitalized on four Mountaineer miscues and a kill from Paige Whipple for a 5-0 scoring run to the end the frame in its favor at 25-14.
With the overall match tied at 1-1, Arizona used a series of runs for the 21-9 advantage. Lux put down a kill, as Hasting served up an ace, to trim the Mountaineers' deficit to 10. However, a trio of UA kills brought the Wildcats to set point at 24-11. An Arizona service error kept West Virginia alive, but another kill from UA helped the Wildcats claim the 25-12 win and the 2-1 match lead.
West Virginia came from behind in the fourth set, tying the frame at 15-all with a kill from Lynch, as well as a pair of Mountaineer blocks. Arizona called a timeout, as both teams exchanged points down the stretch. Sophomore outside hitter Macy McElhaney came up with a huge swing to tie the set at 19-19, but a Wildcat kill and a Mountaineer attacking error handed Arizona the two-point edge. WVU used a timeout to regroup, but its momentum continued to fade, as the match ended with UA scoring four consecutive points out of the stoppage for the 25-19 win and the 3-1 triumph in the match.
Following the San Diego State Tournament, West Virginia will travel to Honolulu, Hawai'i, for another three-day tournament from Sept. 12-14. West Virginia will face host Hawai'i on Sept. 12, followed by UCLA on Sept. 13 and Utah Valley on Sept. 14.
