WVU Caps Regular Season on Senior Day

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team will cap its 2019 regular season on Saturday, as the Mountaineers take on Big 12 foe Kansas in a 1 p.m. ET tilt, at the WVU Coliseum, in Morgantown.
Saturday's contest against the Jayhawks will be broadcasted live on MountaineerTV, with live video and stats links available on WVUsports.com.
"Kansas has been playing well here in the second half of Big 12 play," fifth-year coach Reed Sunahara said. "They are a strong team, but so are we. We just have to find that consistency."
Following the match, West Virginia will celebrate the careers of its 2019 senior class: defensive specialist Gabrielle Cuckovich, outside hitter Katelyn Evans and right-side hitter Erin Slinde.
Saturday's match is a Gold Rush, and fans are encouraged to wear gold. Mountaineer fans in attendance will receive a free gold shaker, as well as a gold rally towel. It's also Mountaineer Kids Club Day, and Mr. Twister, the face-painting and balloon animal artist, will be available on the concourse prior to the match. Additionally, fans will have an opportunity to receive the Mountaineers' autographs one last time following the contest.
Fans can purchase tickets by visiting WVUGAME.com, calling 1-800-WVUGAME or at the Mountaineer Ticket Office, located at the Gold Gate of the WVU Coliseum. All tickets are general admission.
When purchasing online, tickets are $5 each and $3 for groups of 10 or more. At the WVU Coliseum ticket window, tickets will be $7 for adults, $5 for youth and seniors and $3 for groups. The discounted online pricing will be available until first serve on game day. Fans are encouraged to order tickets in advance online at WVUGAME.com to avoid lines at the gate.
Tickets for WVU students are free with a valid student I.D.
West Virginia (11-17, 2-13) and Kansas (9-16, 5-10) will meet for the 18th time overall on Saturday and the 16th time in league play since the Mountaineers joined the Big 12 Conference in 2012. The Jayhawks boast a 16-1 all-time series advantage, though WVU has taken KU to five sets in three of its last four matches. West Virginia dropped a five-set match at Kansas in its most recent meeting on Oct. 10, held at the Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena, in Lawrence, Kansas.
In its last match, West Virginia suffered a 3-1 setback to No. 1-ranked Baylor on Nov. 26, at the WVU Coliseum, in Morgantown. The Mountaineers fell to the Lady Bears in set scores of 30-32, 25-23, 25-22 and 25-17.
Despite the loss, Evans picked up her 1,000th career kill on her 14th kill of the match and added four more to rank second on the team with 18 swings. Sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Kristina Jordan paved the way for WVU, registering 19 kills to hit .256 on the evening. Sophomore setter Lacey Zerwas also recorded her ninth double-double of the season, dishing out 49 assists and adding 13 digs. West Virginia produced 61 kills on 174 total attacks to hit .172 in the loss.
Through 28 matches, WVU is hitting .205 and averaging 12.8 kills per set. Evans leads WVU with 3.43 kills per set to rank sixth in the conference and has recorded double-digit kills in 15 of the last 16 matches. Additionally, Zerwas quarterbacks the Mountaineer offense, ranking fourth in the Big 12 with 10.31 assists per set. Junior defensive specialist Alexa Hasting anchors WVU's floor defense, averaging 4.15 digs per set to rank second in the league.
Kansas comes to Morgantown winning two of its last three matches, most recently capturing a five-set win over Iowa State on Nov. 27, at the Horejsi Family Volleyball Arena, in Lawrence, Kansas. Redshirt senior outside hitter Ashley Smith had a career-high 20 kills in the win, followed by freshman Morgan Christon with 19.
The Jayhawks average 11.5 kills per set and are led by Smith with 2.63 kills per set. Sophomore middle blocker Rachel Langs paces KU's blocking efforts with 1.13 blocks per set, while senior defensive specialist Allie Nelson leads the floor defense with 3.55 digs per set.
