HONOLULU, Hawai'i – Unable to overcome a UCLA offense hitting .344, the West Virginia University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to the Bruins in its second contest of the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Volleyball Challenge on Friday afternoon, at the Stan Sheriff Center, in Honolulu, Hawai'i. The Mountaineers (4-4) fell to the Bruins (5-2) in set scores of 25-9, 25-18 and 27-25.
Sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Kristina Jordan led the way with 11 kills, while senior outside hitter Katelyn Evans notched six kills on the afternoon.
Sophomore setter Lacey Zerwas assisted on 25 of the Mountaineers' 33 kills, adding seven digs and a pair of block assists in the match.
Junior defensive specialist Alexa Hasting dug a team-high 15 balls, while junior middle blocker/right-side hitter Katie DeMeo had a season-high five block assists.
West Virginia finished the contest with 33 kills, 37 digs and seven team blocks.
The Bruins rolled to an 8-4 lead to start the first set and never looked back. The Mountaineers took a timeout to regroup, as Jordan put one through the pins to cut their deficit to four at 9-5. A solo block from redshirt junior middle blocker Audrey Adams, followed by a kill from Evans, brought WVU within four once again, trailing 11-7, but UCLA used nine straight points down the stretch for the double-digit advantage at 20-7. The Mountaineers teamed up for a block to halt the Bruins second scoring streak of the set, but UCLA scored five of the last six points for the 25-9 win and 1-0 match lead.
The teams traded points to start the second, as a kill from outside hitter Macy McElhaney helped West Virginia take the lead at 10-9. However, a pair of 4-0 scoring runs from UCLA put the Bruins on top for good at 20-13. Jordan came up with a huge swing, as Zerwas and DeMeo teamed up for the stop to cut the Mountaineers' deficit to five. West Virginia couldn't recover though, as UCLA used a pair of kills to claim the 25-18 victory and 2-0 advantage in the match.
UCLA took a commanding lead early in the third set, using a 5-0 run to make the score 7-1. WVU put up a fight down the stretch though, as the squad scored three in a row to come within one at 21-20. The Bruins scored three of the next four points to reach set point, but the Mountaineers hung in there, capitalizing on a pair of kills and an ace from Jordan to knot the set at 24-all. However, a pair of kills helped the Bruins walk away with the 27-25 win and 3-0 triumph in the match.
West Virginia will conclude the three-day tournament in Honolulu on Saturday, as it takes on Utah Valley (2-5) in a 10 p.m. ET matchup. Live stats for the match can be found on WVUsports.com.
