Box Score Williamsburg, Va. – Another strong outing by junior right-hander
Alek Manoah and nine runs scored for the third time in four games led the West Virginia University baseball team to a 9-1 victory at William & Mary on Saturday afternoon in Williamsburg, Virginia, in the first game of a doubleheader.
The win was coach
Randy Mazey's 200th at WVU. In seven seasons, he owns a 200-160 record and is the fifth-winningest coach in program history. In 13 years as a head coach, Mazey is 387-320-2.
To open the doubleheader at Plumeri Park, the Mountaineers (11-6) scored a season-high-tying nine runs on a season-best 13 hits as all but one WVU starter had at least one hit. The West Virginia pitching staff held the Tribe (12-3) to one unearned run on five hits.
Manoah led the way with his fourth quality start in five starts this season to improve to 3-1. In 7.0 innings, he allowed one unearned run, in the seventh inning, on four hits with nine strikeouts and three walks. W&M's first hit did not come until the fifth inning.
Senior right fielder
Darius Hill led the team with three hits and three RBIs. He and junior third baseman
Kevin Brophy homered in the win. Brophy's home run led off a five-run fifth inning to get the scoring underway for the Mountaineers. It was his third homer of the year and ninth of his career. Hill's long ball, also his third in 2019 and team-leading 14th of his career, came in the seventh inning.
Manoah struck out the side in the first inning and struck out two in the fourth to leave a runner on second.
Brophy's home run led off the fifth inning and got the Mountaineers on the board. WVU added four more runs on five hits in the frame, all with two outs. Freshman shortstop
Tevin Tucker's infield single scored junior center fielder
Brandon White from second base, and Tucker then scored from second on an RBI single by senior catcher
Ivan Gonzalez. With sophomore second baseman
Tyler Doanes on third and Gonzalez on second, Hill followed with a two-RBI double to center field to cap the inning and give West Virginia a 5-0 lead.
William & Mary got its first hit of the game with a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth, and a double followed to put two in scoring position, but Manoah got a strikeout to end the inning.
WVU added on in the sixth with three runs to extend its lead to 8-0. White singled through the left side to score the first two, sophomore designated hitter
Paul McIntosh and junior left fielder
TJ Lake, who both reached on doubles. After White stole second, Tucker brought him home with a single to right-center.
The Mountaineers added their ninth run in the seventh, on Hill's home run. William & Mary answered with their lone run in the bottom of the inning to make it 9-1, on a two-out, RBI single that came after an error.
Freshman right-hander
Zach Ottinger relieved Manoah in the eighth and pitched a scoreless inning. He allowed one hit, a two-out single, and struck out one. Freshman righty
Madison Jeffrey threw a scoreless ninth inning to secure the win.
