CINCINNATI – The No. 12 West Virginia University baseball team dropped the series finale to Cincinnati, 7-5, Sunday afternoon at UC Baseball Stadium. The Mountaineers fall to 28-12 overall and 13-8 in the Big 12 while the Bearcats improve 29-17 and 10-11 in conference play.

The top three batters in the order – sophomore Matt Ineich, sophomore Gavin Kelly, and senior Paul Schoenfeld – each had two hits on the day with Kelly and Schoenfeld both driving in two runs while Ineich crossed the plate twice.

On the mound, junior Dawson Montesa had three strikeouts in 4.1 innings while allowing one run. Sophomore Joshua Surigao pitched 0.2 scoreless innings while senior Carson Estridge had two strikeouts in 2.0 innings, allowing one run.

The game was scoreless through one thanks in part to a running catch by Schoenfeld in centerfield, slamming against the wall after securing the ball.

In the second, the Mountaineers jumped in front as a run came home on a double play. In the third, small ball produced a run for WVU as back-to-back sacrifice bunts, including a squeeze by Schoenfeld produced a run. Schoenfeld collected his second RBI of the day with a single in the fifth inning to put WVU up 3-0.

The Bearcats got on the board with two runs in the home half of the fifth, but the Mountaineers answered in the seventh as Kelly hit a two-run single, pushing the lead back to three runs.

West Virginia could not hold on to the lead, however, as Cincinnati scored five runs in the eighth to go up 7-5 and held on as the Mountaineers went down in order in the ninth.

WVU will be back on Wednesday, April 29, at Penn State. First pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
