Roadtrip Concludes with Three at William & Mary

Williamsburg, Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team travels to William & Mary for a three-game series in Williamsburg, Virginia, from March 15-17, at Plumeri Park.
The series begins on Friday, March 15, with first pitch now moved up to 4 p.m. ET. The series continues on Saturday at 4 p.m., while first pitch of Sunday's finale is set for 1 p.m.
The Mountaineers (10-6) are coming off a two-game split at Morehead State, which ended a stretch of eight consecutive games against teams that made the 2018 NCAA Tournament. A 9-3 victory on Tuesday extended West Virginia's win streak to five games before a 9-6 loss on Wednesday.
The Tribe (12-2), who host the WVU for the first time since 1968, suffered their second loss of the year on Tuesday, 6-3 at Old Dominion.
Two junior right-handers will take the mound on Friday, as WVU's Alek Manoah (2-1, 2.86 ERA) will face W&M's Wade Strain (2-0, 2.95). Saturday is a matchup of lefties, with sophomore Jackson Wolf (2-1, 3.38) taking the mound for the Mountaineers and Bodie Sheehan (2-0, 2.16) getting the ball for the Tribe. In Sunday's finale, junior right-hander Kade Strowd toes the rubber against William & Mary sophomore righty Jacob Haney (2-0, 5.28).

West Virginia ranks No. 8 in the NCAA with 18 double plays turned, while its 41 stolen bases are ninth-most in the country. WVU is third in the Big 12 Conference with 15 home runs. On the mound, the Mountaineers also rank No. 3 in the league in ERA (3.14), strikeout-to-walk ration (2.25), strikeouts per nine innings (9.7), hits allowed per nine innings (6.99) and WHIP (1.25).
Manoah is No. 15 in the NCAA with 14.73 strikeouts per nine innings and No. 18 with 36 strikeouts. Junior center fielder Brandon White's 11 stolen bases also rank 18th in the country. Sophomore second baseman Tyler Doanes has 10 stolen bases, which is No. 2 in the Big 12 and No. 28 nationally, while senior right fielder Darius Hill's two triples also are second in the conference. Junior right-hander Sam Kessler has recorded three saves, which is No. 2 in the league.
SCOUTING WILLIAM & MARY
William & Mary is 12-2 on the season and 7-1 at home. The Tribe are coming off a 6-3 defeat at Old Dominion that snapped an eight game win streak. Last weekend, William & Mary swept Campbell, with 5-2, 4-1 and 14-5 wins at home.
Hunter Hart leads the team with a .333 batting average with 15 hits, while Hunter Smith has a team-best 17 hits, 14 RBIs and three home runs. On the mound, Zach Tsakounis paces the squad with a 0.77 ERA, three wins and 23 strikeouts in 23.1 innings pitched.
Brian Murphy is in his sixth season as head coach and is 146-149. He came to William & Mary in 2013 as an assistant coach and was named the head coach in 2014. Murphy was named the CAA Coach of the Year in 2014 after leading the Tribe to its first-ever regular-season conference title.

The most recent meeting came in 2016, when West Virginia swept the three-game series, 8-7 in 10 innings, 7-6 and 6-1. Current Mountaineer Darius Hill had five hits in the series while Ivan Gonzalez had two hits and three RBIs and drove in the game-winning run in the 6-1 win in the finale. WVU is 13-11 in Williamsburg, and its last visit to William & Mary came in 1968.

- The series-opening win extended West Virginia's win streak to five games and handed Morehead State its first home loss in seven games. Every starter had at least one hit as the Mountaineers scored nine runs for the second consecutive game on a season-high 12 hits. Meanwhile, junior left-handed starter Nick Snyder struck out a career-best 10 batters in a career-long 6.0 innings. West Virginia's offensive attack was fueled by three home runs, two doubles, six stolen bases and five walks. Senior right fielder Darius Hill, sophomore catcher Paul McIntosh and sophomore second baseman Tyler Doanes all homered. McIntosh led the team with a career-best three hits, two RBIs and two runs scored and was a triple shy of the cycle. Freshman lefty Beau Lowery pitched the final 3.0 innings to pick up his second save of the year.
- Morehead State avoided the sweep the next day. WVU jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but the Eagles responded with a five-run second inning and added three more in the third. Junior first baseman Marques Inman led the team with three hits and hit his third home run of the season in the first inning, while senior catcher Ivan Gonzalez also homered in the first, a two-run shot.
