Mountaineers Split Doubleheader

Williamsburg, Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team suffered a 6-4 loss to split a doubleheader at William & Mary on Saturday afternoon at Plumeri Park in Williamsburg, Virginia.
The Mountaineers (11-7) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and led 4-1 in the middle of the sixth, but the Tribe (13-3) rallied with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, two in the seventh and added another run in the eighth to even the three-game series at one win apiece.
West Virginia opened the day with a 9-1 victory in the first game of today's doubleheader.
"If you want to be a good team, you have to be consistent," WVU coach Randy Mazey said. "You have to do it day in and day out, and we're just not doing that right now."
WVU's four runs came on 10 hits and W&M scored its six runs on eight hits. West Virginia had one error and left five runners on base, while William & Mary did not commit an error and stranded nine baserunners.
Junior first baseman Marques Inman led the team with three hits and had an RBI, a walk and a run scored. Junior left fielder TJ Lake hit his first career home run, a two-run shot in the sixth inning, to notch a team-best two RBIs.
Sophomore left-handed starter Jackson Wolf allowed three runs on four hits in 5.1 innings. He struck out five and walked four. Freshman lefty Beau Lowery suffered the loss and falls to 0-2 on the season. In 0.2 innings, he gave up two runs on no hits with two walks and a strikeout.
West Virginia jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Back-to-back singles by senior catcher Ivan Gonzalez and senior right fielder Darius Hill put two on for Inman, who doubled down the left-field line to bring home Gonzalez. Junior third baseman Kevin Brophy followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Hill.
WVU scored first for fifth consecutive game and the 13th time this season and plated at least one run in the first inning for the seventh time.
Wolf stranded a runner on in the first and gave up two singles in the third, but he picked off one runner and left the other at second.
William & Mary cut West Virginia's lead in half in the fourth on a solo home run by Hunter Smith.
Both teams added a pair of runs on two-run home runs in the sixth inning. Lake made it 4-1 with a two-out blast over the right-field fence that scored Inman. The Tribe answered in the bottom half with a two-run home run by Smith to left to again make it a one-run game, 4-3. Freshman right-hander Ryan Bergert then relieved Wolf and got the final two outs of the inning after a double.
The Tribe took their first lead of the series in the bottom of the seventh. With two on and junior righty Sam Kessler on the mound for Lowery, a two-run double to center put William & Mary ahead, 5-4.
In the eighth, W&M added to its lead on a two-out infield single that came after a single, hit batter and wild pitch. That made it 6-4, and Kessler got a strikeout to end the inning and leave the bases loaded.
In the ninth, sophomore designated hitter Paul McIntosh singled, but back-to-back fielder's choices and a strikeout ended the game.
