NORMAN, Okla. – Unable to overcome an Oklahoma offense hitting .373, the West Virginia University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to the Sooners on Friday evening, at McCasland Field House, in Norman, Oklahoma. The Mountaineers (11-16, 2-12) fell to the Sooners (18-8, 10-5) in set scores of 25-21, 25-17 and 25-22.
Senior outside hitter Katelyn Evans led the way with 16 kills, while classmate right-side hitter Erin Slinde and sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter Kristina Jordan each added eight kills apiece.
Sophomore setter Lacey Zerwas dished out 36 of the team's 41 assists, adding three digs and a pair of service aces.
Junior defensive specialist Alexa Hasting dug a team-high 16 balls in the match, while redshirt junior middle blocker Audrey Adams led WVU's blocking efforts with three total blocks.
West Virginia finished the contest with 44 kills, hitting .239, and five team blocks.
Both squads exchanged points early in set one before Oklahoma went on a 5-1 scoring surge for a 23-16 advantage. Consecutive kills from Jordan, including a swing from junior middle blocker Briana Lynch, cut West Virginia's deficit to four at 23-19. The Sooners put down a kill to reach set point on the next ball, but back-to-back kills from Evans extended the frame at 24-21. The Mountaineers couldn't hang on though, as Jordan's next serve went into the net, handing the Sooners the 25-21 win and 1-0 match lead.
Oklahoma rolled to a 13-8 lead to start the second set and never looked back. Evans found the floor following a WVU timeout, as the Mountaineers teamed up for the stop to come within three at 13-10. However, another 4-0 scoring streak from the Sooners increased their lead to eight at 21-13. Lynch and Evans each added a kill to put the score at 22-16, but the Sooners eventually claimed the 25-17 win off a kill for the 2-0 match advantage.
A kill from Evans jump started a 7-0 run for WVU, as the Mountaineers took a 13-10 lead midway through the third. Both teams traded points down the stretch before OU scored back-to-back points to knot the set at 17-all. Evans placed one through the blockers, as Adams and Zerwas teamed up for the block at 19-18. However, the Sooners rattled off four of the next five points for the 22-20 edge late in the frame. Slinde and Lynch each recorded a kill, down 23-22, but Oklahoma capitalized on a WVU service error to reach set point. The Sooners then used a kill on the next ball to claim the 25-22 victory and 3-0 triumph in the match.
Looking ahead, the Mountaineers will make their way back to the WVU Coliseum to welcome Baylor (Nov. 26) and Kansas (Nov. 30) the week of Thanksgiving to cap their regular season.
