Quintanilla’s Goal Propels WVU to Ninth Shutout
October 24, 2017 10:13 PM | Men's Soccer
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Junior Jorge Quintanilla converted on a penalty kick in the 65th minute to lead the No. 25 West Virginia University men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Penn on Tuesday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
Quintanilla's goal helped the Mountaineers (8-4-4) to their ninth shutout of the season, tied for fifth-most in program history. Freshman goalkeeper Steven Tekesky made three saves as WVU had nine of its 10 shots in the second half. The Quakers (3-10-1) had six shots, four in the first half.
"For the first 45 minutes I thought we had a lot of the ball," WVU coach Marlon LeBlanc said. "We had a lot of control of the game, a lot of good possession that didn't matriculate into very much. The second half, we really dialed it up a notch, we really put a lot of pressure on them. We had a lot more shots, a lot more activity, a lot more final third entries and a lot more penalty area entries. Their keeper makes a couple of good saves, he deflects one off the crossbar. We draw a good PK. I thought Penn was resilient. They fought hard. We knew they would, but I thought at the end of the day we deserved all three points and very pleased with the result."
Quintanilla gave the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead at 64:52. The penalty-kick goal was his second goal of the season and gave him nine points on the year, tied for second-most on the team. In Tuesday night's non-conference victory, he led West Virginia with three shots and had one of WVU's two shots on goal.
Senior Jad Arslan, coming off the bench for the first time this season, recorded two shots, one on net.
The Mountaineers had a chance in the opening minutes, but a ball into the box from the near corner was intercepted inside the six by the Quakers.
Quintanilla followed with a shot from 25 yards out in the 22nd minute, but it was blocked. Five minutes later, WVU had a chance inside the box, but a pass back went out of the box and Penn cleared it.
Following offside calls that negated apparent goals by both teams, Tekesky made a nice save in the 35th minute, and the Mountaineers prevented a chance on the ensuing corner kick. A total of seven offsides were called in the match, six on WVU and one on Penn.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, junior Rushawn Larmond began the second half with a pass to Jad Arslan, but the Penn defense poked the ball out of the box. Ten minutes later, Arslan sent a ball into the box, but it went just past Quintanilla. After the WVU corner kick, senior Louis Thomas had a shot blocked.
In the 59th minute, the Mountaineers had another great chance, as Larmond had an opportunity from Arslan near the penalty kick spot, but his shot was blocked.
Following Quintanilla's goal in the 65th minute, West Virginia continued to apply pressure, as Quintanilla had a shot saved and sophomore Logan Lucas sent a header in that went wide in the 69th minute.
Tekesky preserved the shutout with a nice save on the near post in the 74th minute.
