MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior forward Marcus Caldeira of the West Virginia University men's soccer team has been named the NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Academic All-America Team Member of the Year, as selected by College Sports Communicators. It is the second consecutive season that Caldeira has earned the honor.
Caldeira also earned a spot on the Academic All-America First Team, becoming the first WVU student-athlete to be a three-time first team member. Overall, he is the eighth Mountaineer to be a three-time Academic All-American, joining Eric de Groh (football, 1996-98), Johannes Herber (men's basketball, 2004-06), Andy Lamson (rifle, 2009-11), Thomas Kyanko (rifle, 2013-15), Jack Elliot (men's soccer, 2014-16), Elizabeth Gratz (rifle, 2016-18), and Bianca St-Georges (women's soccer, 2016-18). It is also the 17th occasion that a WVU men's soccer player has been named an Academic All-American.
The Mississauga, Ontario native becomes the second men's soccer player at the Division I level to be a repeat winner, joining Kyle Hiebert from Missouri State in 2020 and 2021. WVU becomes the first Division I program to have three winners as Andy Bevin took home the honor in 2014. It is the eighth time that a Mountaineer has been named the Academic All-America Team Member of the Year along with Bevin, Marcos Scrivner (Rifle, 1998), Herber (Men's Basketball, 2006), Frances Silva (Women's Soccer, 2013), Jevon Carter (Men's Basketball, 2018), and St-Georges (Women's Soccer, 2018).
On the field in 2025, Caldeira scored 14 goals and had seven assists to give him 35 points, the most by a Mountaineer since Jack Cardosa's 59 in 1973. His 42 career goals and 99 career points both rank third in Mountaineer history while his 17 game-winning goals set a new program record.
This adds to Caldeira's list of honors this season, which include being named the Sun Belt Player and Offensive Player of the Year, All-America First Team, All-Southeast Region First Team, and a MAC Hermann semifinalist. Throughout his career, he has been a three-time All-Sun Belt performer, three-time All-Region and two-time All-American.
In the classroom, Caldeira has a 4.0 GPA while studying finance and is set to graduate this winter. He is one of five Mountaineer men's soccer players to be a multi-time Academica All-American along with Bevin (2013-14), Elliott (2014-16), Kevin Morris (2020-21), and Aaron Denk Gracia (2021-22). Caldeira has also been named to the Sun Belt and Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll throughout his career and took home the Sun Belt Elite Award in 2024.
