MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 17/No. 2-seed West Virginia University men's soccer team fell in the Sun Belt semifinals, 3-2, in double overtime to No. 12/No. 3-seed Marshall, Wednesday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers fall to 12-4-3 while the Thundering Herd improve to 11-2-5.
West Virginia had to rally twice in the match after falling behind on two occasions, getting goals from sophomore Isaac Scheer and senior Marcus Caldeira in the second half. Junior Constantinos Christou collected an assist for WVU.
The contest looked destined for penalties but a late handball in the box with 36 seconds left in the second overtime gave Marshall a penalty, which Joao Alves converted to send the Thundering Herd to the final against UCF.
Overall, the Mountaineers outshot Marshall, 18-11, while the Herd had an 8-7 edge in shots on goal. WVU also had a 9-5 advantage in corner kicks.
After 45 minutes, the game remained scoreless with graduate student Marc Bonnaire making four of his five saves on the night.
In the second half, Marshall took the lead in the 48th minute, but the Mountaineers responded in the 53rd minute as Isaac Scheer found the back of the net for his second goal of the tournament.
It was not long until the Herd retook the lead in the 57th minute on a goal by Joao Roberto.
Caldeira had a couple of close chances before finding the equalizer in the 66th minute as the Marshall defender could not clear the ball. It landed at the feet of the striker, who curled a shot through a couple of defenders and past the keeper.
West Virginia had a few chances in regulation to find a winner, but a shot by senior Felix Ewald in the 76th minute was saved while Caldeira's late attempt in the 90th minute went just high.
In overtime, there were no shots by either side until the converted penalty in the 110th minute.
The Mountaineers will now await their fate for the NCAA Tournament with the selection show set for Monday, Nov. 17 at 1 p.m. It will air on NCAA.com.
