MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 13 West Virginia University men's soccer team picked up its fourth straight victory with a 2-0 win over Coastal Carolina, Thursday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers improve to 9-2-4 and 5-1-2 in the Sun Belt while the Chanticleers fall to 5-6-4 and 3-3-2 in conference play.
Â
Sophomores Julen Recalde and Sammie Walker both scored goals for WVU on the night with junior Kanta Ishii, freshman Josh Jones, and junior Isaac Scheer all collecting assists. Redshirt sophomore Toby Mawer made two saves for his eighth clean sheet of the season as the Mountaineers have gone 487 minutes without giving up a goal.
Â
West Virginia outshot the Chanticleers, 21-5, and had a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. The Mountaineers had a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Â
The Mountaineers started fast, earning seven corner kicks and taking 10 shots in the first 25 minutes of the game. In the 26th minute, Ishii found Recalde in the box with a stellar cross and on WVU's 11th shot of the night, Recalde slotted it past the keeper for his third goal of the season.
Â
Â
WVU had a few more chances in the half to extend the lead but couldn't convert as it entered the locker room with just the one-goal lead.
Â
In the 77th minute, Jones crossed the ball into the box for Walker, who battled with the defender. The ball popped into the air, over the goalkeeper, and into the back of the net for Walker's fifth goal this season.
Â
Â
The Mountaineers currently sit in first place in the Sun Belt with 17 points, three points clear of Marshall and James Madison, who play on Friday. If the Thundering Herd and Dukes both lose, WVU will clinch at least a share of the Sun Belt regular-season title.
Â
West Virginia will play James Madison on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Kickoff from Sentara Park is set for 7 p.m.
