MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 24 West Virginia University men's soccer team picked up its first victory in its last five matches with a dominant 4-0 win over Kentucky, Friday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers improve to 6-2-4 and 2-1-2 in the Sun Belt while the Wildcats fall to 1-8-3 and 1-3-1 in conference play.
Â
In his WVU debut, sophomore Joshua Dudock had a goal and an assist while sophomore Juan Alvarez had a goal and two assists. Junior Isaac Scheer and sophomore Sammie Walker added goals while junior Kanta Ishii and sophomore Harry Hogben collected assists.
Â
In the first half, each team had just one shot on goal as the score remained scoreless after 45 minutes.Â
Â
Coming on as a sub to start the second half, Dudock made an immediate impact, scoring what turned out to be the game-winner in the 48th minute off an assist by Hogben.
Â
In the 58th minute, Ishii found Dudock in the box, who touched the ball along to Alvarez. After making one move, Alvarez took a shot with his left foot and found the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
Â
Just a minute later, Kentucky had its best chance to get back in the contest, getting two shots on frame. However, redshirt sophomore Toby Mawer pushed both shots aside as part of his four saves on the night, securing his fifth shutout.
Â
In the 69th minute, Scheer took a pass from Alvarez and dribbled to the top of the box before curling a left-footed shot into the top-left corner of the net for his second of the season. Alvarez collected his second assist on the night in the 86thminute as he took a shot that was saved, but Walker was right there to tap it in for his third goal this year.
