
Mountaineers Host St. John’s to Kick Off NCAA Tournament

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's soccer team begins NCAA Tournament action, Thursday evening, with a first-round matchup against St. John's. Kickoff from Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance by visiting WVUGAME.com or calling 1-800-WVU GAME. WVU student tickets also will be made available at the Mountaineer Ticket Office, located at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The office, as well as the stadium gates, opens at 6 p.m., on game day. WVU students are admitted for free with a valid WVU Student I.D.
Nick Farrell and Adam Zundell will have the call of Thursday's contest on ESPN+. The game also can be heard on 91.7 FM (WWVU) in Morgantown, and live stats are available at NCAA.com.
The Mountaineers enter the NCAA Tournament with a 12-4-3 overall record. In Sun Belt play, WVU finished second with a 7-2 mark before falling in the semifinals of the Sun Belt Championship to Marshall, 3-2, in double overtime.
West Virginia took home numerous Sun Belt postseason awards with senior Marcus Caldeira claiming Sun Belt Player and Offensive Player of the Year. Caldeira and junior Pablo Pozos were both named to the All-Sun Belt First Team while graduate student Carlos Hernando, senior Felix Ewald, and sophomore Nacho Martinez earned spots on the second team. Juan Alvarez and Sammie Walker rounded out the honors by being named to the All-Freshman team.
The Mountaineers have a dangerous attack as they led the Sun Belt and were 21st in the nation with 2.05 goals per contest while averaging 7.32 shots on goal per game, eighth in the country. For the second consecutive season, WVU enters the NCAA Tournament leading the nation in corner kicks per game, averaging 7.89 per match.
Pozos and Caldeira are both top 25 in the nation in goals scored with 11 and 10, respectively. Caldeira is 12th in points with 27 and leads all active players who have played exclusively in Division I with 38 career goals.
St. John's is led by Dr. Dave Masur in his 35th year manning the sidelines in Queens. He is 415-191-112 during his time with the Red Storm which includes the 1996 NCAA Championship.
The Johnnies are 9-5-4 overall this season which includes a few games against common opponents of WVU, a 1-1 draw against Marshall and a 2-1 win over Akron. Guilherme Gomes leads the team with eight goals and was named the Big East Freshman of the Year.
