Mountaineers Set to Open Five-Match Homestand Against No. 9 Akron

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University men's soccer team welcomes No. 9 Akron to Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Thursday, Sept. 3, with kickoff is set for 7 p.m. It is the first of five straight games in Morgantown for the Mountaineers.
Nick Farrell and Adam Zundell have the call of Thursday's contest on ESPN+. The game also can be heard on 91.7 FM (WWVU) in Morgantown, and live stats are available at WVUsports.com.
Single-game tickets are available to purchase in advance by visiting WVUGAME.com or calling 1-800-WVU GAME. When purchasing online, tickets are $12 each. Any remaining tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for youth and seniors at the stadium ticket window on match day.
New for the 2026 season, all student tickets for WVU's Olympic sports will transition to mobile delivery. Students will now be required to log in to their WVUGAME.com account to reserve a student ticket for each home athletics event. For Olympic sports, there is no request process. Students will simply log in to their account using the single sign-on functionality, navigate to the sport of the event they would like to attend and reserve a ticket.
Thursday's game will be Throwback Thursday with fans asked to wear vintage WVU gear. Fans will also be able to enter a raffle to win a vintage WVU Men's Soccer jersey at the match. It is also our Canned Food Drive with all proceeds benefiting The Rack, WVU's student food pantry. Fans can bring their items to the marketing table.
The Mountaineers are coming off a 1-1 draw at No. 21 UNC Greensboro on Friday. Senior Pablo Pozos scored for WVU while sophomore Julen Recalde and junior Jacob Redenfors each collected assists. The Mountaineers are coming off 13-5-3 season and their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance. In the Sun Belt Preseason Coaches Poll, WVU was picked to win the league, the first time the Mountaineers are preseason favorites since 2022.
Pozos was named the 2026 Sun Belt Preseason Offensive Player of the Year after tallying 11 goals and three assists in his first season with the Mountaineers. Junior midfielders Isaac Scheer and Nacho Martinez joined Pozos on the Preseason All-Conference Team.
Overall, the Mountaineers return 15 players from last year's squad while adding 15 newcomers. Six players join WVU out of the transfer portal while there are nine first-year college players suiting up for the Gold and Blue.
Akron is 2-0-1 this season with wins over Dayton and Wake Forest and are currently ranked No. 9 in the United Soccer Coaches poll. In the Big East preseason coaches poll, Akron was selected unanimously to finish atop the Midwest Division.
Remi Agunbiade and Matt Dreas were both selected to the Preseason All-Big East Team. Brett Kaminski has yet to allow a goal this season while making three saves.
