MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 10 West Virginia University men's soccer team secured an important 1-0 victory over Old Dominion, Wednesday evening at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The Mountaineers improve to 10-2-2 and 5-1-0 in the Sun Belt while the Monarchs fall to 5-4-4 and 1-3-2 in conference play.
WVU remains tied at the top of the Sun Belt table with 15 points along with Kentucky and Marshall, the next two opponents for the Mountaineers.
In Wednesday's contest, senior Felix Ewald scored the lone goal for the Mountaineers, his third of the season. Sophomore Isaac Scheer and graduate student Nicolas Scargle both picked up assists on the goal.
Graduate student Marc Bonnaire made two saves to pick up his seventh shutout of the season.
The Mountaineers outshot ODU, 14-3, and had a 9-2 advantage in shots on goal while also taking 15 corner kicks compared to just two for the Monarchs.
The best chance in the match for Old Dominion came in the 33rd minute when Jamie Wynne fired a shot from close range, but Bonnaire reacted in time to kick it away and keep the game scoreless.
Ewald came off the bench in the 41st minute and made an immediate impact as he found the back of the net in the 44th minute. Scheer sent a corner into the box where Scargle headed it up. Ewald was in the right spot, heading it home to put the Mountaineers up just before the half.
West Virginia kept attacking in the second half, getting five shots on frame, but were turned away by ODU goalkeeper Michael Statham each time. The one goal turned out to be enough, however, as the Monarchs managed just one shot on target in the second half which Bonnaire was able to safely secure.
The Mountaineers will be back on the pitch, Sunday evening at No. 25 Kentucky. Kickoff from the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex in Lexington is set for 7 p.m.
