
WVU and Kentucky Set to Battle for Top Spot in Sun Belt

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 10 West Virginia University men's soccer team hits the road for a showdown with No. 25 Kentucky on Sunday, Oct. 26. Kickoff from the Wendell & Vickie Bell Soccer Complex is set for 7 p.m.

With just three games remaining in the regular season, the Mountaineers sit tied atop the Sun Belt table with Kentucky and Marshall as all three teams have 15 points. WVU will play Marshall on Oct. 31 while the Thundering Herd have already defeated Kentucky earlier this season. Two wins by the Mountaineers in the next two games will clinch the No. 1 seed and at least a share of the conference title.
West Virginia is 10-2-2 this season after defeating Old Dominion, 1-0, on Wednesday. Senior Felix Ewald scored the game winner for the Mountaineers while sophomore Isaac Scheer and graduate student Nicolas Scargle each collected assists. Graduate student Marc Bonnaire made two saves to secure his seventh shutout of the season.
Junior Pablo Pozos leads the Sun Belt with 10 goals while senior Marcus Caldeira has seven goals and seven assists. Both players have 21 points to lead the conference.
Kentucky is 8-2-3 overall and 5-1-0 in the Sun Belt, tied with WVU and Marshall for first place.
Alex Ruiz leads the team with six goals and 15 points. JMU transfer Sebastian Conlon has made 33 saves in goal in his first season with the Wildcats after winning Sun Belt Goalkeeper of the Year in 2024 with the Dukes.
