MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – After playing to a 2-2 draw, the No. 16/No. 2-seed West Virginia University men's soccer team defeated No. 7-seed Old Dominion, 5-4, in penalty kicks, Sunday afternoon to advance to the Sun Belt semifinals. The Mountaineers are now 12-3-3 while the Monarchs finish their season at 5-5-8.
Sophomore Isaac Scheer scored his first goal of the season while junior Pablo Pozos scored his team-leading 11th goal of the year for the Mountaineers. In penalties, graduate student Carlos Hernando, sophomore Oscar Emilio Trujillo Lizárraga, Pozos, freshman Juan Alvarez, and Scheer all converted while graduate student Marc Bonnaire made two saves to clinch the shootout victory.
In an evenly matched contest, the Mountaineers outshot ODU, 18-15, with a slight 10-8 edge on shots on goal. Corner kicks were even at three apiece.
The game was scoreless until the 33rd minute when sophomore Tristan Pusztahegyi sent a ball into the box. Scheer headed it down where it rebounded it back to him. He gathered and fired a shot past the keeper and into the back of the net.
In the second half, Old Dominion evened up the game in the 66th minute on a goal by Lewis Rourke. Rourke then put ODU on top in the 83rd minute.
The Mountaineers looked for the equalizer and found it in the 89th minute off a free kick. Alvarez sent the ball into the box where Hernando flicked it closer to goal. Pozos was in the right spot to head the ball into the corner of the net with just over a minute remaining in the game.
After an uneventful first overtime period, WVU went on the attack and took six shots in the second 10-minute stanza. Seniors Marcus Caldeira and Felix Ewald both hit the crossbar while Caldeira had another shot get saved as he slipped on the wet grass.
In penalties, Bonnaire made a save on the first Monarch attempt and then turned aside a shot in the sixth round to advance the Mountaineers to the next round where WVU will take on No. 3 seed Marshall. Kickoff from Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
