
Mountaineers to Face Marshall in Sun Belt Semifinals

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 17/No. 2-seed West Virginia University men's soccer team takes on No. 12/No. 3-seed Marshall on Wednesday, Nov. 12, in the Sun Belt semifinals. Kickoff from Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium is set for 7 p.m.
Wednesday's contest will air on ESPN+ and can be heard on 91.7 FM (WWVU) in Morgantown with live stats available at WVUsports.com.

The Mountaineers advanced in the Sun Belt Championship after coming out on top in penalties against Old Dominion in the quarterfinals. The two teams played to a 2-2 draw before WVU advanced 5-4 in the shootout.
Sophomore Isaac Scheer scored his first goal of the season while junior Pablo Pozos tallied his Sun Belt-leading 11th goal of the year. Freshman Juan Alvarez and graduate student Carlos Hernando each picked up assists.
Graduate student Marc Bonnaire made a season-high six saves and clinched the shootout victory by stopping the Monarchs in the sixth round.
The Mountaineers earned the No. 2 seed in this week's championship by finishing the Sun Belt season with 21 points and a 7-2-0 record in conference play. Overall, West Virginia sits at 12-3-2 this season and are No. 16 in the United Soccer Coaches poll and No. 12 in the NCAA RPI.
West Virginia had seven players named All-Sun Belt, led by senior Marcus Caldeira who was named the Sun Belt Player and Offensive Player of the Year. Pozos joined Caldeira on the All-Sun Belt First Team while Hernando, senior Felix Ewald, and sophomore Nacho Martinez earned spots on the second team. Alvarez and Sammie Walker rounded out the bunch by being named to the All-Freshman Team.
Caldeira leads the Sun Belt with 25 points on nine goals and seven assists while Pozos has a conference-leading 11 goals. Ewald has added four goals while Scheer is second on the team with six assists.
Marshall is led by ninth-year head coach Chris Grassie, who is 110-39-29 during his time in Huntington, which includes the 2020 National Championship. The Thundering Herd are 10-2-5 this season and finished third in the Sun Belt with a 6-2-1 mark in conference play.
Joao Roberto (4g, 3a) and Carl Rombert (3g, 5a) lead Marshall with 11 points this season. Eddie Demarco has made 26 saves this season while recording five shutouts.
