MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 13-9 to Kennesaw State, Saturday at Kendrick Family Ballpark. The Mountaineers drop to 13-1 while the Owls improve to 6-10.
Junior
Logan Sauve hit his first home run of the season, drove in two, and scored three runs while junior
Sam White continued his hot hitting, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and three RBI. Senior
Jace Rinehart also drove in three runs on the day.
The Owls scored two in the first to take an early lead before Sauve got one back in the bottom half with a solo home run. Kennesaw State added two more runs in the third to take a three-run lead.
In the bottom of the third, the Mountaineers scored five runs on four hits to jump in front. A bases-loaded walk to Sauve started the scoring before a two-run single from White tied up the contest. Rinehart and junior
Skylar King followed with a run-scoring groundout and sacrifice fly, respectively.
The Owls answered in the next half inning with two runs to tie up the game at six. Rinehart put WVU back on top with another groundout, but Kennesaw State evened up the game again with a run in the sixth.
In the seventh, the Mountaineers retook the lead with two runs as White hit a sacrifice fly followed by a fielder's choice from Rinehart.
West Virginia could not hold on, however, as the Owls scored six runs in the ninth inning, hitting a two-run home run to tie the game before hitting a grand slam to take the lead.
First pitch for the rubber game of the series is set for Sunday at noon.
